The most important thing to do for your eyes is to keep them protected and to keep them from injury.
Eye injuries often take place in the home while doing home improvements, or even regular chores, and sports. Safety glasses are always recommended when eye injury is a possibility, however sometimes people forget or do not use them. There are some essential steps to take if liquids accidentally get into your eye. There are many possibilities when liquid chemical makes contact with the eye. Chemical contact is the most severe and can even enter the eye through rubbing after handling harsh chemicals.
If non-toxic liquids enter the eye the best thing to do is use fresh water to clean the eye. These liquids include shampoos, soaps or other toiletry type items. More severe types of contact can cause pain, stinging, swelling, redness or a burning feeling.
The first thing to do with more serious liquids is to keep ones face directly under running water for at least 15 minutes. The water should continuously be flooding the eyes. It is best to hold eyelids open by using ones clean fingers.
Contact lenses must be removed immediately. It is best to seek medical advice if you are unsure about the harshness of the chemical that contacted the eye, since some chemicals do not have severe symptoms yet can be quite damaging.
Liquids such as perfume are not as harmful as acidic liquids but they should still be cleaned out from the eyes by allowing water to flush out the eyes.
Switch eyes every 30 seconds to allow both eyes to receive the water flow. It is important to blink excessively to allow the water to really enter the eye. Another option is to create an eye bath out of a clean cup or small bowl and blink continuously in the water with eyelids held open. Once the liquid is out of your eyes it is best to give them some rest for up to an hour by keeping them closed.
