What is Zentangle Art?

11/19/2024

What is Zentangle Art?
Zentangle art is a form of meditative drawing that focuses on creating intricate, structured patterns known as “tangles.” It was developed by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas in the early 2000s. This method combines mindfulness and creativity, offering a relaxing way to create beautiful art without requiring any prior artistic skill.

Key Features of Zentangle Art
  1. Simple, Repetitive Patterns: Zentangle designs are made up of “tangles,” which consist of repetitive shapes like lines, dots, curves, and orbs. These patterns are combined in various ways to form complex, mesmerizing designs.
  2. Small and Portable: Zentangle is traditionally created on small, square tiles (3.5 inches by 3.5 inches). This manageable size allows artists to complete a piece in a short time, making it ideal for busy schedules or travel.
  3. No Erasers or Mistakes: One of the core principles of Zentangle is that there are no mistakes—only opportunities for creativity. This philosophy helps reduce self-criticism and encourages a mindset of exploration and acceptance.
  4. Mindfulness Through Art: Zentangle art is unplanned and intuitive, allowing creators to focus on each stroke without worrying about the final result. This focus fosters mindfulness, similar to the meditative state achieved through yoga or deep breathing.
  5. Black and White Simplicity: Traditional Zentangle uses black ink on white paper to emphasize contrast and simplicity. While color can be introduced, the minimalist approach is often preferred for its calming effect.

Why Zentangle is Unique
Zentangle art is not just about creating visually appealing designs—it’s about the process. The method encourages a “one stroke at a time” philosophy, which helps individuals stay in the moment, relieve stress, and develop focus. Its nonjudgmental nature ensures that anyone, regardless of artistic ability, can participate and enjoy the process.

Benefits of Zentangle Art
Zentangle art is often used as a therapeutic practice. It helps reduce anxiety, increase concentration, and build self-esteem. Its structured approach makes it accessible, while its abstract nature provides a safe space for self-expression. It is also widely used in classrooms, corporate settings, and art therapy sessions to foster creativity and relaxation.

In essence, Zentangle art transforms simple strokes into intricate designs, making it not only a creative activity but also a journey of mindfulness, healing, and joy.

This art-card emphasizes a simple as well as a profound philosophy about life: the beauty and joy that can be found in small, everyday moments. Often, we are so focused on chasing big dreams, achieving major milestones, or solving life's larger problems that we forget to appreciate the smaller, quieter experiences that bring real happiness. This artwork serves as a reminder that life's greatest pleasures often come from the little things—a warm cup of tea, a beautiful sunset, a meaningful conversation, or the comfort of a quiet moment.

The bright yellow backdrop symbolizes positivity and warmth, reinforcing the cheerful message to embrace these small joys. The surrounding vines and delicate design details reflect growth, suggesting that appreciating the little things helps us to cultivate a richer and more fulfilling life. It is in the small details of daily life that we find comfort, peace, and connection.

In a world that often prioritizes speed and productivity, this artwork encourages a pause, a moment of reflection, and an invitation to find contentment in what we already have. When we savor the little things, we not only nurture our own well-being but also develop a greater sense of gratitude for the present moment.

Positive Mind, Positive Vibes, Positive Life

Picture
This art-card encapsulates the transformative power of positivity in every aspect of our lives. The central message is a reminder that our mindset shapes the way we experience the world. A positive mind breeds positive thoughts, which in turn generate positive energy or vibes. These positive vibes, like ripples in a pond, influence not only our own well-being but also the atmosphere around us, affecting our relationships, opportunities, and overall quality of life.

The vibrant colors and celestial imagery emphasize the expansive impact of positivity. Just as the stars and moon light up the night sky, a positive mindset can illuminate even the darkest times in our lives. The phrase “Positive Mind” at the top suggests that our thoughts are the starting point—what we focus on mentally becomes the foundation of our reality. “Positive Vibes” refers to the energy we radiate based on those thoughts, and “Positive Life” is the natural outcome of nurturing an optimistic and hopeful attitude.

This art-card invites us to take control of our inner world, cultivating a mindset that sees possibilities rather than obstacles. As we start doing this, we not only find more opportunities and better success, but we also start to radiate out our deep positive-self. We start to influence and enhance  everyone and everything in a good way.

Life is Too Short to Wait

The art-card delivers an apt and poignant message about the value of time and the importance of living fully. Its central message, creatively framed by nature and celestial elements, encourages us to seize opportunities and act on our passions rather than waiting for the perfect moment. Time though unpredictable is very fleeting... it is something we cannot afford to squander!

The imagery evokes a sense of urgency but also optimism, suggesting that every day holds possibilities if we are bold enough to take action. The celestial background, with stars and the moon, reminds us of the vastness of the universe and the brevity of our time in it, urging us to make the most of what we have. The surrounding leaves add a touch of nature, symbolizing growth and the ever-changing seasons of life.

By waiting for the 'right' moment, we risk letting life pass us by. This art-card serves as a gentle as well as as a powerful nudge to act now. Whether you are pursuing a dream, nurturing a relationship, or embarking on a new adventure, the message is clear: life is short, and we should make every moment count.

This vibrant and uplifting art-card delivers a timeless and powerful message about the nature of success. The key idea is that success is not always about grand gestures, monumental achievements, or rare moments of brilliance. Instead, it is found in the day-to-day activities and how we approach them. It speaks to the importance of dedication, attention to detail, and the pursuit of excellence in everything we do, no matter how small or routine it may seem.

When we focus on doing the ordinary extraordinarily well, we start to see the beauty and potential in even the simplest of tasks. Whether it is a daily chore, a work project, or a conversation with a loved one, each moment offers an opportunity to shine and make a difference. The message resonates particularly well in today’s fast-paced world, where we often overlook the importance of consistent effort and commitment to quality.

In a broader sense, this artwork serves as a reminder that true success is built through sustained effort, perseverance, and a mindset that values excellence in all things. It invites us to embrace our everyday actions with intention and purpose, turning the mundane into extraordinary accomplishments.

Making arts and crafts improves your mental health probably even more than the secured feeling of having a job

9/15/2024

Creating arts and crafts can have a profound impact on your mental health, often in ways that go beyond the security of having a stable job. While the feeling of job security is important for reducing stress and providing financial stability, it doesn’t always fulfill the deeper emotional and psychological needs that contribute to overall well-being. Arts and crafts, on the other hand, offer a creative outlet that taps into those needs in a way that can be even more powerful.

When you create something with your hands, whether it is a painting, or knitting, or building an origami bird, you enter a state of flow—a mental state where you are completely absorbed in the activity. This focus helps to quiet the mind and reduce anxiety. In this way, arts and crafts serve as a form of mindfulness, allowing you to be present and fully engaged in the moment, which can have a calming effect that is very similar to meditation. For many people, this provides a sense of relief from their daily worries and stress.

Working with arts and crafts also give you a sense of accomplishment. When you finish a project, no matter how small, you feel a boost in confidence and pride. This feeling of productivity and purpose contributes significantly to one’s mental well-being. Unlike a job, where external pressures and expectations may weigh heavily, and there is a constant sense of being correct, not making mistakes and of being evaluated… creating art is often done for the sheer joy of it, giving you a chance to express yourself freely without judgment.

In a world where job security can sometimes bring stress along with stability, arts and crafts offer a space for emotional release, creativity, and personal satisfaction. These activities provide a deeper connection to yourself, allowing for emotional healing and personal growth that extends far beyond the traditional sense of security that a job might offer. This creative engagement nourishes the mind and provides a deep sense of wellbeing… leading to a happier and more balanced life.

The Role of Creative Expression in Spiritual Ascension

10/11/2023

Creative expression, in its many forms, has long been regarded as a pathway to spiritual understanding and growth. From ancient tribal dances to modern-day visual arts and music, creative practices provide an avenue to explore the depths of human consciousness, and by extension, our connection to the divine or the universe.

Here is how creative expression plays a role in spiritual ascension:
1. Transcending the Ego
Creative endeavors often lead to a flow state where the egoic self recedes, and one becomes engrossed in the act itself. This transcendence is akin to meditative states where the mind becomes still, and we touch a space of pure consciousness.

2. Connecting with the Subconscious
The act of creation allows for the subconscious mind to surface. In this space, buried emotions, memories, and insights can emerge. This provides an opportunity for healing, understanding, and growth.

3. Manifestation of Inner Realities
Art, in any form, is an external manifestation of internal realities. By giving form to these inner experiences, one can better understand and integrate them, fostering spiritual growth.

4. Channeling Higher Energies
Many artists often speak of being a "vessel" or "channel" when they create, suggesting that the inspiration comes from a source beyond their individual self. This aligns with the concept of downloading insights or energies from higher realms or consciousness.

5. Enhancing Mindfulness
Creative practices require a keen sense of awareness and presence. Whether it's playing an instrument or painting, being fully present in the moment enhances mindfulness, which is foundational to spiritual growth.

6. Alchemy of Emotions
Art can act as a crucible for transforming raw, often chaotic emotions into something structured and beautiful. This alchemical process mirrors spiritual practices where lower vibrational energies are transmuted to higher ones.

7. Universal Language
Art transcends cultural and linguistic boundaries, touching individuals regardless of their background. This universality mirrors the interconnectedness of all beings, a fundamental tenet of many spiritual paths.

8. Catalyst for Reflection and Introspection
Engaging with art, either as a creator or an observer, often leads to deep reflection. It can act as a mirror, showing us parts of ourselves that we might not regularly confront, thus aiding in self-awareness and spiritual growth.

9. Cultivating Discipline and Dedication
Mastering any art form requires discipline, commitment, and perseverance. These qualities are parallel to the dedication needed on the path of spiritual ascension.

Conclusion

Creative expression, whether it is writing, music, dance, visual arts, or any other form, is not merely an external display of skill or emotion.

It is a deeply spiritual act that bridges the gap between the seen and the unseen, the known and the unknown. By engaging in and valuing creative practices, one can accelerate their journey towards spiritual ascension, tapping into the vast wellspring of insights and energies that the universe offers.

Soy wax candles- a sustainable, eco-friendly choice to light up our homes!

10/19/2021

What are soy wax candles?

Soy wax, a 100% natural wax made from vegetable soybeans. After beans have been harvested, they are cleaned, cracked and de-hulled before being rolled into flakes. The flakes are then used to extract soybean oil and the rest is used as animal feed.

Soy wax is made of renewable and environmentally friendly resources, whereas traditional paraffin wax is made with petroleum and is not renewable. Soy wax is a more sustainable choice than other types of candle wax. It also burns slower than paraffin wax which means that your soy wax candle will last longer.

Soy wax candles burn cleaner and produce less soot than candles made from other materials. Also, we find that Soy wax is an excellent carrier of scent and so we do not need to add any kind of chemical additives or amplifiers to enhance the scent. This also means that the soy wax candle will exhibit a ‘true scent’!
Picture

So, to sum up the main reasons... i.e. the many benefits of choosing soy wax candles are:

  1. They are 100% natural, as they are made from soybean wax. Soy candles have no intrinsic toxins, carcinogens, or pollutants so they are less likely trigger allergies.
  2. They burn cleaner and longer. Paraffin wax melts at a lower temperature than soy wax. Soy wax will burn cooler and last longer than paraffin candles. Candles with a longer life span allow you to enjoy delicious scents for longer.
  3. Soy wax is healthier for the environment and also us. This eco-friendly substance isn't harmful to the environment.
  4. The wax pool surrounding the wick is what emits a candle's fragrance into the air. Soy wax has a lower melting point than paraffin wax, which means there is more wax around the wick of soy wax candles, which results in stronger scents.
  5. Soybean wax, which is made from soybeans-a vegetable, is biodegradable. This makes it easier to clean up accidental spillages while making the candles and is also very environmentally friendly.

Simple way to make your own soy wax candles:

There are many free resources on the internet, which clearly take you step by step thru the simple soy wax candle making process. I will suggest checking out some of those videos to gather all the finer, minute details of the process. But I do want to give you a simple gist of the soy wax candle making activities, so you know how easy it is to make your own soy wax candles and will investigate making your very own natural, eco-friendly creations!

So, for starters… melt the soy wax. Place soy wax flakes in a glass bowl and place the bowl on a saucepan about a third full of water, creating a double boiler. Stirring occasionally, heat the wax until it becomes soft and pourable. Allow the wax to cool slightly before adding fragrance.

Also, do note that the fragrance oils are chemically made and will have more additives than essential oils. And even though you use essential oils, once they are heated and the oil is volatized, to give off the fragrance... they are still chemical components (though naturally occurring). The same goes for candle-colors. When you add candle colors, you are also adding more synthetic components to your natural candle soy wax, and those who are sensitive to chemical additives could react quite adversely to the volatile components that get generated when we light such a candle.

It is ofcourse in a very small quantities and so is usually okay for most people (that is why we see all these perfumed- scented and colored candles being sold everywhere!). Most of those are made with the terribly toxic paraffin wax, atleast you are using natural, bio-degradable soy wax! Still... I have clarified this information about the fragrance,  essential oils and candle colors for those who are allergic or extremely sensitive to fragrance, or chemical additives in general, or have health conditions which need added consideration.

Now coming back to our soy wax candle-making… place your wick in the middle of the candle container. Then, pour the soy wax onto the candle container's center. If you find it difficult to hold the wick in the center of the candle container, then you can use wick holders or candle putty, which are usually available in craft stores.

Hold the wick in place until the wax hardens and then use either a clothespin, hairpin, or a wooden chopstick (like I have while making the soy candles in the image), to hold the wick centered and upright.

Now, is the most difficult part… to wait while the wax cools and solidifies to become an amazing soy wax candle!

As we approach the holiday season, I hope that you will choose these sustainable, earth friendly soy wax candles to light up your hearth and home.

Bringing in your garden- dried lavender flower bouquet adds a fragrant, rustic touch to your space!

9/9/2021

Lavender bouquets bring in the beauty and scent of the garden. You can enjoy the scent of a fragrant garden for a long time, by creating dried lavender arrangements. It is a very easy-to-grow herb, and it is also very easy to handle the cut flowers.

Lavender can be harvested fresh, dried and then used to make pretty lavender bouquets, wreaths or special potpourri mixes! Other garden bloomers such as coneflowers, bee balm, and roses can be incorporated into lavender bouquets. These strong vertical lines are a stark contrast to the more rounded forms of other summer blooms.
Picture
In addition, you can also wrap stems in rubber bands and let them dry upside-down in a warm, dark place. After the stems have dried, you can arrange dried lavender bunches with other dried flowers or make a large display of dried lavender by combining several bunches. The color of dried lavender is affected by sunlight, so it is best to keep them out of direct sun.

There are many amazing psychological and physiological benefits that one can avail from the lavender flowers. They are a symbol of purity, love, and romance. A dried lavender bouquet like this can bring back great memories or awaken beautiful feelings.

A dried lavender flower bouquet can be used as a rustic decoration to beautify your space and to infuse your home with a soothing scent. Profound and yet, the relaxing scent of lavender can help you to rest and relax. Ofcourse, dried lavender flowers make for an amazing tea that will help you to get deep rejuvenating rest. But more on that in another post…
