Change is inevitable- an important Soul Lesson

It is said that ‘Change’ is the only constant in this life. In Sanskrit, the ancient language from Vedic India, life is referred to as the ‘Samsara’- a constant repetitive change-  The Cycle of Birth and Death.

This cycle is also often compared to the wheel of time or fortune- because at any given time, we may feel at the top of our game or at the bottom- but, one thing is for sure... it shall change.

With the passing time, situations, events, people will change and our life will transition and transform. This is an inevitable law.

Most people dread change. But once we understand the true cyclical nature of life and our very existence then we can make peace with it.

This will automatically allow you to create a small gap between your life-scenario and your inner-being.

This is the first step of worldly detachment that is mentioned in almost every ancient spiritual guidance. It is important that we learn to embrace 'change' in all its forms... not as the end of something we know, but as a birth of something new... situations, events and possibilities. Though we typically think of change in a negative way, it is important to remember that as change is associated with life, stagnancy is associated with death!

Change and movement is important for growth and rejuvenation.

Once you truly understand this concept... not the wisdom of these words as a mental concept, but actually feel the truth of these words as a living reality of your existence in your heart, then you will truly start walking the path  of ascension to higher dimensions.

What is a ‘Karmic Whirlpool’ and how is it created? (Understanding Karma & Karmic Clearing series)

4/25/2021

“Do not feel envious of the happiness of those who live in a fool’s paradise, for only a fool will think that is happiness.”

–Bertrand Russell
This quote probably applies most to folks who are caught in a “karmic whirlpool”- where, at an apparent level things may seem to be good, pleasurable and ‘happy’; but in reality they are too blinded by the karmic fog and too deluded by Maya to see that their so called “happiness” is actual a fool’s paradise. They do not see the karmic-whirlpool they are stuck in.

Typically, astrology provides a good understanding of past life accumulated karmas. It also provides detailed indication of which “change opportunities/possibilities” could arise in a person’s life time.

The play of these two along with Divine grace determine the various life experiences an individual will encounter in their life-time.  More a person chooses to live consciously- more he will understand his karmic lessons and clear past baggage.  In this manner, he will clear his past karmas and his life course will proportionately deviate from his astrological natal chart.
Note: To learn more about   the spiritual usage of astrology, you may want to check out the Jyotish For Wellbeing section under the Vedic Wisdom blog. Jyotish is the original and authentic name for Vedic Astrology and it means  - "Eyes of the Vedas"... the means by which one can know   the method of Divine workings (Vedas).
Picture
How learning Karmic lesson affects our state of Consciousness
What I have noticed is that at times, there are certain individuals who are very low in their consciousness but still seem to be “above karma”, i.e. astrological events do not seem to impact them. This is very counter-intuitive! When one is more mired in the Maya and delusion of this world, you would expect them to be under more karmic influence and as such be strongly impacted by astrological events such as Saturn transits, eclipses, etc.

So what’s going on here? Something is amiss! How come these folks seems to be “happy” even though they are living unconsciously? They also seem to be deviating from their natal chart and no astrological event seem to adversely affecting them. How is that possible?

What I have noticed is that such people are in a type of “Karmic Whirlpool”. As we know, when a person is stuck in a whirlpool, they are too caught up in it to get affected by the calmness or turbulence of the bigger water body. It could be stormy seas or high/low tides- all this will be meaningless to the one caught in a whirlpool.

Something similar is at play in the above scenario! Such folks either have a very crucial imminent lesson which they need to learn and/or their lower un-conscious living has got them into a negative energy vortex. Either ways, they need to hit their rock-bottom!   Only after that will they start getting “action choices” or start experiencing their other karmas.

So in reality, it is not that these people are above their karmas. Actually, they are “stuck” at a soul-journey juncture and until they rise from it, all astrological event impacts seem to be suspended.

What can we do to address the growing issue of personal isolation and apathy? - Can we be surrounded by so many people that it makes us feel deeply alone!

1/26/2021

I am writing this post a bit stunned by the news of this K-drama celebrity, Song Yoo-Jung. It seems, she was found dead at 26 in her Seoul apartment. The cause of her death has not been disclosed, though there are many articles online about it possibly being suicide as has been the case with a spate of several incidences in the Korean entertainment industry in recent times.

Now, I am not very familiar with the k-entertainment industry. In fact, until this past November, I did not even know that k-drama existed on a global platform. But because of a particular individual (who is from that industry) with whom I feel a deep connection; I have been trying to get myself more acquainted with the Korean culture, dramas and music.

Today, for some strange reason, I felt something was energetically off and made a google search about Korean entertainers committing suicide (something so very strange and atypical for me to do!!) and came across the news of this lady’s death!! I wish peace and solace to her soul. I am sure her family and fans are finding it hard to grapple with this news- I pray and hope that they find the strength and courage to assimilate this experience.
Picture
It is always shocking when we hear of such news- what is it that drives one to such extreme measures? When it comes to celebrity lives, even though at an apparent level they come across as happy with everything going well for them, if we really perceive the energy beneath their veneer then many of them seem to feel a complete sense of void and fear.

Before I could gauge people’s energies, I used to see celebrities and have a typical view of their ‘successful life’. But now, as I can sense their deeper feelings- beyond what they portray for the camera, many of those in public limelight- have such deep pain as part of their mental-makeup and un-expressed fear deeply ingrained within them, that instead of feeling appreciation or envy for the position they hold in society, many a times- I feel a sense of genuine caring and sadness (at the irony ) when I see them!!

Probably their success which makes them the object of envy, also happens to be the reason, they are not able to easily trust anyone- after all, how could they be sure that people are not approaching them for their own covert reasons!! What a challenging space to be in… where we reach a level of success in life where the very stature that we worked so hard to accomplish… seems to captivate us.

This reminds me of an art card, I had made several months ago- where I had shown a beautiful natural scenery in the background with a nice house in the mountains and a sharp barbed wire fence in the foreground with the caption saying- what protects us also has the potential to imprison us!!

It is important to be aware of people’s intensions when they approach us. It is also important to ensure that we protect our own interests… but at what point do we stop ourselves from becoming so concerned about ‘others’ that they start to dictate our behaviors! We need to ask ourself- why do we live our life from ‘outside in’ where what is going on around us tends to determine what is happening within us- instead of from ‘inside out’- where we take charge of our inner wellbeing and then act from that inner sense of centered calmness.
Taking one’s life is a very drastic measure, it is not just a crime (in most countries) in the legal sense, but also a crime against humanity. What kind of space have we created as a society and as individuals- where people feel so hesitant to reach out to another that they feel it is less painful to take such a cruel, drastic step!!

Every other day, we read these wall-posts on social media, stating that if you ever need to speak to someone, then feel free to reach out. But do we as individuals really pay attention to those who are around us? The most “expensive” thing that we can ever give anyone is attention, as it is time- the one aspect of life which can neither be bought nor created!! We all have a certain measure of it available to us. Surely, we can increase our availability of time with efficient use of our resources and well managed activities, but we cannot create or trade it- no matter the extent of our wealth.

My main reason to write this post is to re-bring this point to everyone’s notice. With many people couped up in their homes for very long periods of time, with media constantly bombarding us with shocking world news, with the world economy on the brink of a challenging twist… it is very much possible that many people who have typically managed to curb their fearful instincts, are now feeling a sense of apathy and hopelessness.

If you are someone who is feeling low or know of someone who may be experiencing such a situation then please, try your best to ensure that they get appropriate guidance and help. Issues like depression or mental trauma are completely ignored in many cultures across the world. Unfortunately, there is a stigma attached with it- which deters people from reaching out. But mental health and any related issues can not only have serious repercussions, but they can many a times be life-threatening. So, it is important that we stop judging and stigmatizing people’s challenges- be they physical, emotional, or mental- any such ailment should be addressed with the same level of care and support.

If someone reaches out to you- a friend, a family member, a coworker or even a complete stranger- make it a point to really look at them with genuine caring attention and smile with your heart in it. Let your smile reach your eyes! Many a times, all it takes is a genuine, heartfelt smile to deter someone and bring them back from their mental world of dreadful thoughts!!

There are so many instances where people have later confided that during their trying times, it was that one stranger on the street who looked at them with such genuine caring that they felt a renewed sense of hope and possibility.

As those who are on this journey of living a conscious and aware life, let us re-new our commitment to each other and to humanity- let us pledge to bring joy, caring and hope to not just those who reach out to us but to all in general. Let us ensure that genuine love and caring reflects in all that we say and do in our daily activities and all our interactions. May the Divine bless us to fulfill our pledge. Amen…

Before there can be re-generation, one needs to face one’s internal-death!! “Hollowing oneself” to be the perfect Divine instrument can be a painful process

1/26/2021

This past year has brought on many changes- not just in the outer world as we have always known it- but also within each one of us!! The year 2021 is about regeneration- about being born again like the mystical bird Phoenix- that is believed to have risen from its own ashes.

There are many people who use this comparison to indicate their own spiritual transformation. But we need to know that there is a fundamental difference between change and transformation.

Change means ‘something’ is different from what/how it previously used to be. Transformation on the other hand- means that there is nothing remaining of the old- whatever was there has now completely ‘transformed’ into this new state of being… this new state of working.

So, by its very definition- transformation is a very foundational and impactful process. We need to get rid of all that is old and not relevant and then morph into the new state of existence. Though, on the surface it sounds very pleasant and comforting to know that we will truly, deeply, and completely be this ‘new’ person- the actual process can be very painful.
Picture
For starters, we need to give up, remove or erode all that is old. As we all know- change is always difficult for each one of us. However, our reality may be fraught with challenges and worries, we tend to form a state of comfort- with the ‘known’- we tend to find solace in that which is ‘familiar’… so having to disrupt it and remove it can not only be very frightening, but the very process of disengaging, ripping off ‘what currently is’ can indeed be very painful, if not traumatic.

Having had to go thru several personal transformations over the years, I can surely vouch to say that though the final state of transformed being-ness is amazing- having to go first go thru the ‘death’… ‘burning down to ashes’… is very unpleasant and extremely challenging.

The ‘hollowing out’ that we need to do- is almost like gorging out the insides of a turnip so that we can convert it into a nice musical instrument- like a rattle!! The better we hollow it out, that much effective it will be as a good musical instrument- but the gorging out process obviously is very difficult. Even simply writing those words- seem to paint on a picture of pain and horror!!

Why I am writing this here, is because- this is the part, where many people give up on their spiritual pursuits. They get on the spiritual band wagon, thinking that it is all about comfort and solace. Yes, that is very much the case as we start out.

But as we progress on our journey- we come to a point, where it is no longer about being a spiritual person- it is about being the “very essence of spirit”- about being the “very essence of Divine existence”, at that point- we need to transform. That is the only way we can proceed further.

Though I am not trying to compare any one of us with the amazing messiah Jesus, it is important to remember that as Jesus, he was just a carpenter’s son, like others during his time. Doing simple work and leading an ordinary life. But it is his internal spiritual journey which ultimately brought him to the point, where he had to transform from “Jesus to Christ”.

It is a crucial point in everyone’s spiritual journey where we need to buckle up, suck it in and take on the task of deep internal transformation or we can simply choose to be a person ‘leading a spiritual life’. That choice is ours to make- and it is a crucial choice- as it determines not just our spiritual progress but also what truly makes us feel content, complete and full of internal light & joy.

As you observe yourself and the spiritual journey you have taken on to date, ask yourself- where do you stand on this path? Do you have the courage to face your fears (internal and external) as you deeply transform?

If not, where can you seek that required help/guidance? How can you bring yourself to that point in your soul-spiritual journey where you will finally be able to transform yourself into your very best version- after all, becoming the very personification of consciousness itself, has to be the very best version that any soul, any being can ever be!!

How to see with an 'un-biased' eye, if we really want to know a person or any situation- this includes getting to really know our own self!!

1/22/2021

There are many things that we all “think” we know! It could be about a particular topic of expertise where we may feel like we know all that there is to it. When it comes to people around us, most of us tend to think we know those people.

What we fail to realize is that there are many facets to each person and even if you have spent a lifetime in close proximity to someone like your parent or spouse, you probably still don’t know all there is to them.

And, unfortunately many a times, we don’t know our self either! We are always immersed in activities and never take the time to simply be with our self in contemplation and meditation. Really figure out who we are and what is our real nature.
Picture
When we meet someone, interact with them; it is wise to take out a few minutes and ask oneself- “what do I think of them?”

Try to really question your perception of them, your inference about them with an unbiased mind. Try to observe them, really listen to what they are saying and see if your conclusion/your branding of “who they are” is different than who they seem to be as they are speaking to you.

Each day set aside some time to also reflect on your own self. Take some time out to also reflect on your own self.  After all, most of us tend to conclude about our own self too- I am beautiful, I am smart, I am rich and so on.

We all change and morph over time. See how you are changing. Are you going in the direction you want to… i.e. are you morphing and transforming into a better version of yourself or are you regressing into your old bad behaviors or even worse picking up new detrimental ‘thought and action’ patterns!!

See, if you can find that gap between your conclusion of who you think someone is and who they possibly could be!

Always look out for the 'commonality' that underlies our apparent diversity

1/21/2021

Our thinking seems to be constantly shrouded in duality. We like this, and we don’t like that. We like this person and we don’t like someone else.

Unfortunately, most of this evaluation and branding happens in a subtle and unconscious manner. Our preferences are steered by our samskars, which are the karmic tendencies which then go on to become our “vrittis” i.e. our behaviors which are governed by latent and innate tendencies.
Picture
But someone who is truly wise knows that the same divine is there in each one of us. He/she is able to see the common ‘one-ness’ underneath all the diversity that is around us.

What we need to do is to develop the ability to see the “one-ness” in all. After you meet someone or interact with someone, it is helpful to take a moment to reflect on the commonality between you and that person you were just speaking with. However different you may be at an apparent level; can you see the underlying common aspect between both you and them?

If you both belong to the same sex, same community, same work place, it would be easy to find more commonalities- but can you try to see beyond these- at a fundamental level, how/what is common between all of you?

How to win with 'surrender'? Learning about the amazing yielding power of nature...

1/19/2021

Surrender! The word immediately brings to our mind the image of someone being defeated and giving up. Now that could be the case if it was a battle with another person or a group. BUT, what are we supposed to do in life?

We have always been told to “buck up”, “take charge” and always be in control. And there is some truth to this- but the person we need to do this with is, us- we need to take charge of our self and be in control of our own thoughts and action. Instead, what most of us end up doing is that we try to control everything external- other people, situation, events and so on.
Picture
This becomes a losing battle from the very start, since- the external situation never was and never will be in any one person’s control. There are complex ways in which life itself determines who gets what, when and so on.

Life determines these external factors- our job is to respond to life in the best possible way that we can. But that seems so difficult to do- how can we initiate this important process of surrender? How can we win and achieve all our goals, ambitions and dreams while surrendering to the Divine, to Life?

When we realize that the divine is the source of all and everything in existence, then it becomes not only easy but almost logical to surrender all outcomes to the divine and do what is needed in any given situation.

When we work at something with faith and devotion, then sooner or later it will yield to us! This is just the “nature of nature".

So, keep your attention on the source of your inspiration, the divine within your heart, as you go about the day, carrying out all the activities...

How can we bear thru painful circumstances? – How remembering the cycle of time, can help us get thru a painful life-situation

1/18/2021

In the last few years, there have been so many wildfires all over the world!! We, in Canada experienced some really terrible ones in 2003, where almost 12% of our beautiful parklands in the Kootenay mountains were scorched down to ashes!!

Why I am writing about this is- recently I came upon one of my hiking journal entries from back in October of 2015. We had gone into the Kootenays to check out the new growth that had started to take place. As the photo shows- the beautiful little saplings had started to take on their form- with the promise of one day becoming grand and magnificent again- like how they used to be.

It was such an inspiring experience to not only feel the pristine energy of these new pine trees but also see them start to thrive again where the ground still was covered in the ashes of their predecessors!!
Picture
New growth in the midst of old burned down trees- as the mountain and few surviving trees bear witness...
Parts of the Kootenay National Park in British Columbia, Canada- October 2015
Life is like that in many ways- we speak of transformation and being like the phoenix. But we need to remember that for new to grow, what is old, what was previously there must get burnt down… and that can be a very painful (dreadful) experience indeed.   (You may want to check out-   Welcoming 2021 with a renewed sense of purpose and exuberance .  Even though it speaks about welcoming 2021, its message holds true for all time.)

Change by its very inherent nature tends to be unsettling to our “security-seeking” life-approach. But when we remember that the very word Samsara, which is the Sanskrit word for our living world, means Change- we realize that change is not only required, but it is inevitable. Change is what allows us to grow and thrive… to constantly evolve and adapt- as if we are in some kind of a game. It is no wonder that in the Vedic tradition, our daily living, our world is compared with a “Game of Life”.

In this past year- it seems like people everywhere are getting angrier day by day- and many are wondering about this world that we are living in!! Even though at the surface level, we may feel a bit sad or even a little apathetic at times- being couped up in the house or being concerned about the world or personal economic situation- It is very important to remember the good that was and will continue to be.

Destruction and re-creation are part of the natural cycle- this is the cycle of time- called Kaal Chakra by the ancient Vedic seers. Literally, it means the Wheel of Time and it indicates the 'Circle of Life'. It reminds us that though we experience time in a linear manner, in reality- the expression of time in our lives and our deeper experience of it in our life has a cyclical pattern to it.

And though experiencing change can be a painful experience, when we keep our focus on the good that has been and will again be- it makes it easier for us to bear a ‘painful present’ life-situation.

Travel & Hiking Journal Notes from October 4, 2015

After a beautiful Friday, Saturday started with mucky weather in Calgary. Rain, snow and maybe some sleet! So, it was a perfect day to get out into the Kootenays! It was warmer and thankfully no rain or snow... We conducted three short hikes. First to Marble Canyon, second to Paint Pots and third was Fireweed Trail along the continental divide between Alberta and BC. All these places are not just gorgeous, but their history and geography really blows one's mind!

Almost 12% of the Kootenays was burned in a terrible fire in 2003- caused naturally from several lightning strikes. It was great to see nature at work- where new growth was growing from the ashes of the old!

Feels like I left a piece of my heart back in our parks. Cannot wait to go back...

How to deal with toxic or stale (stagnant) relationships? - How to get the energy flowing again in your life so that you can attract vibrant people and situations? (Understanding Karma & Karmic Clearing series)

1/16/2021

We are all looking for loving and fulfilling relationships, but how many people truly take stock of all the people in their life. It could be our phone contact list or our social media network. We all tend to have many contacts on our phone that have been there for years on end- where we have neither touched base with them nor have, they contacted us!!

Now I do understand that social media network has different dynamics- though frankly speaking we should a give our social-network a good re-look as well, particularly if you use social media only to keep in touch with friends and family- i.e., you do not use it for professional reasons.

Everything in our “sphere of reference” takes up some energy from us. This is the reason that all Feng Shui, Vaastu and other spatial energy experts- ask us to declutter and remove old and un-used things from our life!!
But what about the people in our life?? Do we really take the time and make the effort to give a “clear look” to all the people in our life… to ensure that those who surround us are the very type of people that we really want to be hanging around us. If we do not do that, then there will be un-checked toxic and/or stagnant people who will continue to be within our sphere of reference- sapping energy and vitality from us!!

Here is something I like to periodically do in my life- particularly at the start of the year, on my birthday and other personally relevant days.

  • I will go thru my phone list and check out all my personal contacts.
  • If it is someone that I have not spoken to or interacted with for some time, then I will send them a quick note (email/text) or give them a quick “hello-call”.
  • If we are able to get in touch and rejuvenate our connection, then great. I keep that personal contact on my phone.
  • But, if I find that the person did not bother to reply or that there was no meaningful re-connection, then mentally I wish them well, thank them for the time that we did know/interact with each other and then delete their contact information. I remove them not just from my phone-list but also from my mental space and sphere of reference.
Picture
Doing this allows me to keep a clean and clear ‘relationship doorway’ in my life.

This not only ensures that I don’t clog up my ‘personal space’ with uninterested/dis-engaged/toxic folks, but it also gives me a chance to set forth a heart-felt intension out into the universe that- “I am grateful for all the people that it has sent me and that by clearing up my surroundings, I have created the ‘space’ to have new, more meaningful relationships and connections in my life. That I am willing and ready to welcome new, wonderful people in my life.”

Hope you take some time out this new year- to clear up your people-space and make way for new, loving and caring relationships in your life.

    Our Journey to "Oneness"

It is a journey and like all journeys, it is set with many moments of challenges and accomplishments.

But when one's heart is true and the decision is made to "be the best that one can be", then each challenge merely seems like a stepping stone, to be overcome to reach and experience new heights of existential living.

Hope you find these notes inspiring enough to initiate your own journey...

What else will you find here??

Here you will find thoughts, ideas, musings and  insights which make us reflect on the nature of our life and reality. I hope that these will connect with you.

These articles address the various insights, lessons and at times modern-interpretations of techniques and methods of ancient wisdom (particularly Vedic Culture) and also Shamanism, Buddhism, Druid- Paganism, Sufi Islam and Taoism.

It tries to bring the wisdom of ancient, insightful ways to benefit a modern, evolving and conscious lifestyle.

Frankly it brings many of the spiritual concepts to  a "real  life" level!!

Think of this guidance as "Spirituality for the Rest of Us"... folks who  have families,  careers,  material goals & ambitions  and so on... the ones  who cannot simply extrapolate what  typical spiritual gurus and guides say, when they live special monastic lives.

Each one of us may have different life situations but ultimately we are all ONE life and we all go thru these myriads of situations, experiences, thoughts and feelings at some point or other in time.

Read along and see how these lessons, insights and guidance can help you to chalk out your own path to 'One-ness'- where you are successful, healthy and Happy.
