The macula is a tiny area of tissue lining in the retina that is located at the back of the eye. It is responsible for our ability to view fine details with clarity and enjoy activities such as reading street signs and small print.
Age-related macular degeneration is the most common type of macular degeneration since it is often the body’s response to aging.
The main symptoms of macular degeneration include vision difficulties such as distortion, blurred vision and, in some cases, complete loss of central vision.
It is not common for peripheral vision to be affected by loss of central vision, therefore victims of macular degeneration can still see to the side.
Macular degeneration is rarely the reason for complete blindness, regardless of whether or not it is treated. Most people who experience macular degeneration can still use their peripheral vision and often only find small impacts on their vision.
Lutein is one of the best supplements to take in order to prevent macular degeneration. It has been recommended for people of older 50 to take lutein supplements to ward it off. Lutein can also be part of a regular diet through dark leafy vegetables and works well because it boosts macula pigmentation. It is suggested that five servings of green vegetables weekly is the optimal amount.
The amino acid called Taurine is also beneficial in promoting tissue repair. The recommended daily intake of Taurine is 500 milligrams. Free radicals are known as a common cause for deterioration and damage to cells. Antioxidants such zinc, Vitamin C and E help the body fight free radical damages. Other supplements worth taking for healthy eyesight include vitamin C and multivitamins.
It is necessary to keep your body working well by eating high quality foods that keep cholesterol levels low. Smoking is directly linked to the defectiveness of multivitamins and do not help prevent macular degeneration.
Caffeine, alcohol and sun damage are also contributors to macular degeneration.
