A highly trained therapist performs neuromuscular therapy, or a massage, on both the muscular and skeletal system by using “trigger points”. Trigger points are areas on the body that aren’t visible, but are very sensitive to touch. They trigger pain in other places that would seemingly appear to be unrelated.
An example of this is the trapezius muscle, the back’s most superficial muscle, which has a trigger point above the shoulder. When it is pressed, it activates a pathway that travels from the point towards the back of the ear, past the head and down through the eye’s corner.
When the blood flow is not enough, the lactic acid builds up due to daily life stress and exercise and keeps building until the muscle is completely sore.
Another reason for a trigger point is injury, such as muscle, cartilage or bone injury, which can hinder nerves. Yet another is anxiety, depression or poor posture. Anxiety and depression are often noticeable through poor posture, because it causes us to slouch and refrain from standing upright. When our posture is disturbed, for whatever reason, the muscles and nerves are prone to suffering.
The objective of neuromuscular therapists is to relieve pain and improve posture by performing massages and other techniques that promote muscle looseness and restore blood flow to the affected areas. The first step during a session is to have a consultation with the therapist and explain your symptoms and worries. The therapist will then observe your posture and decide how to correct the issue.
Each person requires a unique approach to treat their concerns and to regain good posture and minimize associated pains. The therapist applies their hands on the trigger points and applies pressure to release tightness from tissues.
Neuromuscular therapy is ideal for those who are suffering from neck, back, shoulder, hip, leg and arm pains, which can cause other illnesses to occur if they remain untreated.
