Emotional Freedom Technique for Health & Wellness (Introduction to Alternative Therapies- Natural Healing series)

​Emotional freedom technique, or EFT as it is often abbreviated, is a method of healing that is comparable to acupuncture. The major difference between EFT and acupuncture is that EFT does not require the use of needles and can be self-practiced. EFT also does not take a long period of time to learn, which makes it applicable to the learner’s life soon after learning the techniques. It is typically used to combat stress and to remove negative or destructive feelings.
 
It is a method that is sometimes called “psychological acupressure”. This is because it helps by removing blocks in our system of energy, which is the reason that negative feelings, such as discomfort, arise. When the energy system within our bodies is blocked, we have a hard time dealing with emotions and this often prohibits life from continuing in a joyful manner for a certain period of time.

​Symptoms of blockage can include physical or emotional issues, lowered self-esteem and confidence, feelings of anxiousness and depression or the onset of unhealthy and addictive activities. Long-term issues with blockages can lead to a variety of illnesses or diseases.
 
In order to remove blockages and restore balance in the system, EFT uses techniques that involve the use of the tips of fingers instead of needles. The fingertips are meant to “tap” at certain points of our meridians of energy, which are located just below our skin surface. The treatment is mostly painless and is not invasive in any way.
 
These methods were introduced in the 90’s by Gary Craig and have taken off with practitioners, therapists and individuals all over the world. Some of the problems that EFT has helped treat include phobias, relief of both emotional and physical pains from abuse or traumatic events, harmful behaviors, depression, addictions, anxiety and a wide variety of illnesses.
 
It focuses primarily on encouraging the body and mind to heal themselves and to take care of issues from within, which is why many of those who practice EFT receive fast and desirable results. It is a powerful and effective method of self-healing that gives the power to the individuals that are willing to learn the techniques. 
 
EFT starts by asking the healer to picture and define unconstructive issues or emotions that may be the cause of pain or issues. They are then asked to choose a number between 0 and 10 to describe the intensity of the problem, with 10 being the worst.  The methods to apply after this initial stage can be found online through various resources such as articles or videos. You can begin learning EFT whenever you feel like it.
