What is Lucid Dreaming?

Lucid dreaming is the process of being aware of one's surroundings while dreaming. For most people, when they dream during sleeping, they do not have any control over what they dream or their actions within the dream. 

The goal of lucid dreaming is to become aware of your dreaming during REM sleep.

One way to learn to be more aware of your dreams is to write them down. A dream journal allows you to write down what you dreamt about every morning. It also allows you to write down details of your dreams if you can remember them.  
In addition to writing down your dreams, you can also identify certain dream patterns that can help you in lucid dreaming. Over time, you will become more aware of your dreams and more prone to lucid dreaming. 

There are also certain practices one can take up to get more attuned to one's dreams and their content. The first step ofcourse is to be able to maintain awareness while one is dreaming. 

Having control over your dreams is one of the most intriguing aspects of lucid dreaming. This technique can help you achieve incredible feats - you can fly without anyone seeing you, have sex with movie stars, rob Fort Knox, and more. You can do things that you cannot do in real life, like talking to animals and being someone else! If you have the proper training and mindset, lucid dreaming can help you to have some amazing experiences!

Research on lucid dreaming has shown that the brain region responsible for self-reflexive and creative activities is involved in lucid dreaming. In fact, it has been shown that lucid dreaming may help people deal with traumatic experiences in their past and work towards improving their quality of life. 
Another benefit of lucid dreaming is that it can help people with anxiety and stress. Lucid dreaming can also help with enhancing one's creativity.

Additionally, lucid dreaming has been shown to help people with depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. It is not safe for everyone, and a qualified doctor must help you decide if lucid dreaming is for you.

​Some lucid dreamers even use this technique as part of their therapy sessions.

By proper training in Lucid Dreaming, a person is not only aware that they are dreaming (instead of the usual unawareness) but many a times they are able to steer the course of the dream. Some lucid dreamers are even able to control what they dream, when they dream and what are all the finer details of their dreams- including the participants and their actions within the dream.

Although lucid dreaming is on the fringe of science. Traditional it has been attributed to the realm of mystics, New Agers, and poets. But slowly the medical community is looking into this practice and bring more clarity and science to this otherwise fuzzy world of lucid dreaming.
