How papaya can help with maintaining your health and wellness... (Nutritious Foods series)

​Papaya is one of the most recognized fruits around the world due to its sweet taste and richness in health benefits. Papaya has been used for a long time for both consumption and medicinal uses. Seeds, leaves and milk of papaya trees are often used to aid with intestinal problems and to eliminate intestinal parasites and worms. In some countries like Bangladesh, India and Pakistan, papaya is even believed to stop pregnancy.
 
Papaya is packed with nutrients including dietary fiber, protein, iron, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium and potassium. It is rich in vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B6, B9, C and E. The vitamins in papaya make it a great fruit for boosting the immune system. Vitamin C is potent in papaya and helps improve skin conditions, eyesight and preserve healthy mucus membranes. Papayas are excellent for fighting free radicals.

​Other nutrients in papaya include lutein, beta-carotene, cryptoxanthin and zea-xanthin. Antioxidants and nutrients work together by slowing down processes of aging, which are caused by free radicals. Carotenes protect against various cancers. The rich enzyme content in papayas makes it easier for the body to digest and takes less work for the body. Its easy digestibility, high soluble fiber and water content make it a great aid for healthy digestion.
 
The enzymes in papaya, chymopapain and papain, lower inflammation and aid the body in speeding up the healing of burns. Beta-carotene, vitamin E and C are also beneficial in lowering inflammation. Papaya has no cholesterol and lots of nutritional fiber that aids in decreasing high levels of cholesterol.
 
Papayas high content of water, in combination with plenty of soluble fiber, aid digestion and stimulate healthy bowel movements. Papaya is a well-known anti-constipation treatment. Papaya helps the body speed up the process of food elimination and thereby lowers chances of colon cancer.
 
When the body is stressed it is unable to produce the appropriate amounts of the B vitamin group. Papaya has a high amount of folate, a necessary B-vitamin, as well as other B vitamins that help encourage and maintain cell growth. 
 
Papaya can be consumed in many ways; it can be eaten straight after cutting it in half, added to salads or used in a variety of recipes. Papayas are typically cut in half length-wise and seeds are removed in order to eat it with a spoon. Drops of lime or lemon juice enhance the flavor of the papaya.
