How garlic can help with maintaining your health and wellness... (Nutritious Foods series)

​Garlic is one of the most common ingredients in cooking. Many dishes are not complete without garlic, an allium family member. For thousands of years, it has been used and grown throughout the world. The reason for its strong smell is due to the properties of sulfur, which contribute to the health benefits of garlic.
 
Aside from its delicious flavor, garlic is also a very healthy food that can be used for its medicinal purposes. The Chinese have used garlic in medicine for more than 3,000 years because it promotes blood circulation and is also regarded as an aphrodisiac. Garlic is essential for a healthy diet due to its high content of antioxidants that improve and maintain cardiovascular health. Garlic has been found to lower “bad” cholesterol and stop tumor growths.

​Garlic is packed with calcium, manganese, potassium, tryptophan, phosphorous, selenium and vitamins B1, B6 and C. All these vitamins, antioxidants and minerals make it an excellent immune system booster. Garlic is often referred to as nature’s antibiotic due to its ability in aiding against viruses and bacteria that are known to cause flu and colds. Garlic has been found to alleviate conditions of candida yeast, or yeast infections. 
 
There are plenty of home remedies that use garlic to help with coughs, warts, toothaches and infections of the skin and throat. Garlic is known as a detoxifier since it promotes toxin release from the liver. At the same time, garlic strengthens and protects the liver. It is ideal for maintaining a healthy stomach and lungs. 
 
Garlic is a natural blood thinner and has many positive affects on the heart. It stops blood clots, stimulates the opening of vessels and promotes iron flow within the body. Some studies have found that garlic can help decrease high levels of blood sugar and blood pressure. It also works as an anti-inflammatory and stops free radicals from entering the body. The anti-inflammatory properties found in compounds in garlic have also been found to aid with arthritis. 
 
Garlic should be consumed in its fresh, raw form in order receive all the benefits it has to offer. This is quite difficult for some and those who consume cooked garlic are still receiving many of the benefits. Other forms of garlic include pastes, pills and flakes, though none of which match the benefits of raw consumption. If garlic is consumed raw, it is best to be mindful of the amount since too much can cause an upset stomach.
