​Spelt is an ancient grain that has traces of gluten and many special properties such as nutrients and minerals. It is a natural whole-food with plenty of beneficial substance that is found right in the grain kernel. The taste of spelt is quite nutty and many people enjoy using spelt in pasta and bread. The grain is highly water soluble, which makes it easy for the body to digest its nutrients. It is rich in protein and vitamin B2 as well as complex and simple carbohydrates. 
 
Spelt is also rich in magnesium, niacin, vitamin E, copper, thiamin and manganese. It also contains amino acids, fatty acids, sodium, minerals, and soluble and insoluble fiber.  Spelt is an excellent alternative to wheat and can help with many health-related issues such as allergies, diabetes, atherosclerosis, arthritis, autoimmune disorders and cardiovascular disease.

​Complex carbs are necessary in aiding blood from clotting and promoting the immune system. There is an abundance of fiber in spelt that can lower total “bad” cholesterol levels. Fiber attaches to bile acids that are responsible for causing cholesterol. The body doesn’t absorb fiber and when fiber leaves the body through feces, the bile acids go along with it. This creates less of an effect on cholesterol levels. 
 
Since spelt is low in gluten and high in fiber, it is easier to digest than wheat. Those who suffer from digestive problems such as irritable bowel syndrome can benefit from incorporating spelt into their diet. Spelt has been found to protect against breast cancer for pre-menopausal women. 
 
Common wheat has a higher glycemic index than spelt. People can reduce risks of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease by using spelt instead of processed wheat in their diet. The combination of magnesium, fiber and vitamin E in spelt is important for the enzymes that are necessary in discharging glucose, thereby reducing possibilities of diabetes. Any diseases that are related to insulin resistance can benefit from using spelt as a common wheat substitute.
 
Consuming spelt can prevent cardiovascular diseases due to the high content of niacin found in the grain. Lignans and phytoestrogens are two vital compounds that are in spelt. The phytonutrient called lignin is a plant compound that is beneficial to health. It helps reduce various tumor developments including colon, prostate and breast cancer and promotes cardiovascular health. 
 
Phytoestrogen is also a plant compound that helps the metabolism of bone, cholesterol levels, elasticity of blood vessels and other metabolic processes.
