Understanding the difference between feeling "blue" and being depressed can make a big difference in the lives of those who are suffering from this debilitating ailment.

With proper treatment, the symptoms of depression can be managed, and a person can lead a more productive and enjoyable life. If you or a loved one is suffering from depression, it is important to seek help as soon as possible.

Signs of depression
While everyone experiences feelings of sadness or low mood from time to time, it is important to distinguish between sadness and depression. While feelings of sadness or blueness are natural and may occur as a result of stressful situations, depression can be very severe. It can lead to physical symptoms. It can also cause people to feel hopeless, tearful, or lose interest in activities that used to give them pleasure.

Another important sign of depression is a sense of despair, doom and gloom. When someone is experiencing depression they almost always see the glass 'half empty'. They do not see the sunshine, joy or goodness in life. They either feel that either such positive sense of wellbeing either does not exist or that it only exists elsewhere and not in their life. People who are feeling depressed tend to have a strong attachment with one certain aspect of their life and a strong sense
disconnect with all the other facets of their life.

Fortunately, there are ways to deal with these feelings. By understanding the difference between feelings of low mood and depression, you can take appropriate action to alleviate your symptoms and improve your quality of life. Proper treatment can make life more productive and enjoyable for both you and those around you.

The first thing you should do is talk with your doctor. Feelings of sadness usually pass with time, but if they persist for days or weeks and make it difficult for you to function normally, then you may be suffering from depression. Depression is a mental illness that affects all ages and genders, and can cause a range of changes in behavior and attitude.

People experiencing major depression should seek help as soon as possible. The symptoms of depression can range from mild to severe. Often, the symptoms of depression are a result of a combination of different circumstances, so it is important to seek medical treatment early on to avoid symptoms from getting worse.
A person who suffers from depression may experience feelings of sadness, frustration, hopelessness, and confusion. While sadness usually fades in time, depression does not. The same goes for feelings of frustration, anger, and confusion. Sadness and feeling low are very different and there are some important demarcations between them.

Treatment for depression may involve taking antidepressants, which can take four to six weeks to take effect. While these medications will not make depression go away completely, they can certainly make it manageable.

The right combination of medications and therapy can help patients manage their symptoms. Depending on the type of depression, long-term treatment may be needed.

While feelings of sadness may be a natural part of life, knowing the difference between depression and feeling low and blue can help you better process your emotions and determine when you need help.

A health professional can help you determine the difference between sadness and depression and help you decide when you need to seek treatment. They can also help you learn the right steps to take after you experience a depressive episode.

Postpartum depression is a type of depression and it can affect a mother's relationships with her child, her partner, and other family members. Although postpartum depression usually clears up after a few months, it does increase the likelihood of future episodes of depression. Another type of depression is seasonal affective disorder, also known as SAD. It causes people to experience depression only during the winter season.
