The many healing benefits of Cabbages (Healing Veggies series)

​Have you ever taken time to consider cabbages and their medicinal values? If you did so, you would be eating cabbages everyday! There are many special properties in them that make them good for your body. For instance, when cabbages are eaten raw, they can lower cholesterol levels and bind bile acids in the digestive tracks due to their fibers.

There are different types of cabbages with the most common ones being red cabbages, green cabbages and savoy cabbages. The differences between them are found in the patterns of their glucosinolates. Savoy cabbages are a good source of sinigrin which according to research, is useful in preventing various types of cancers such as colon cancer, cancer of the bladder and prostate cancer.

On the other hand, red cabbage is highly recommended because it is rich in anthocyanin polyphenols that protect the body in a better way than green cabbage compounds.

On overall, here are some of the medicinal values of cabbages:
  • Cabbages help in cancer prevention
There are three elements that make cabbages the perfect food for cancer prevention: They are rich in anti-oxidants, anti-inflammatory components and glucosinolates. These three elements have the capability to make sure that cabbages are effective in preventing cancerous growths in cells. There are also some rare circumstances where cabbages have treated cancers.

  • Cabbages act as antioxidants
Because cabbages are a perfect source of vitamins A and C, they have a high concentration of carotenoids like beta-carotene. This make them stand out among the best antioxidant vegetable diets. The Polyphenols in cabbages also contributes to their antioxidant nature. If you are to compare the white and red cabbages, the latter has more polyphenols and is a better anti-oxidant despite the fact that it is rarely consumed.

  • Helps in supporting the digestive track
Research has proved the importance of cabbages in the digestive track system. They have satisfied that cabbage juice helps in healing stomach ulcers. Cabbages also contain many nutrients such as antioxidant polyphenols and glutamine which regulates population of the stomach’s bacteria.

We can conclude that cabbages are the best gift you can give to your health. They also provide support to the cardiovascular system and reduce body cholesterol. Cabbage juice is also of great medicinal value when taken frequently. The more you take cabbages, the longer you are likely to live. For this reason, when planning your next meal, ensure to include cabbages.
