Pomegranates are more than just your average fruit; they are a super food packed with nutritional value, minerals and vitamins. The pomegranate is also known as the “Chinese Apple.”

​Aside from being a well-loved fruit, it is also well known for its juice.  The pomegranate is grapefruit sized and comes in reddish hues. 

 
Pomegranates are a super food because they are packed with beneficial ingredients. 
They contain large amounts of vitamin C, as well as vitamins A, B5 and E. Minerals found in the fruit include iron, calcium and potassium. The main source of fiber in a pomegranate comes from its seeds. 
 
The antioxidant properties in pomegranates are tripled in comparison to other renowned antioxidant packed foods. It has polyphenols including catechins, flavonoids, tannins, ellagic acid and anthocyanins. The phytochemicals allow for pomegranate to help reduce signs of aging, disease and tissue damage. The fruit is highly nutritious yet low in calories.
 
The seeds of a pomegranate, the arils, contain the healthiest parts of the fruit. Drinking pomegranate juice or eating the arils gives a healthy dose of anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogens and cancer fighting food. The juice has phytochemical complexes that stimulate estrogen and serotonin receptors, which help to reduce depression. It also helps prevent, or significantly slows down, osteoarthritis.
 
Risks of a heart attack, stroke and heart disease are also reduced due to the pomegranates ingredients that help with blood flow and pressure. The seeds are similar to a natural form of aspirin in that they stop blood clots from forming. Oxidation is the main cause of the negative effect that free radicals have on the body. Pomegranates are not just beneficial for overall health; they also prevent cancers such as breast, prostate and colon cancers. They inhibit vascular changes that can cause tumor growths and leukemia as well. 
 
Another benefit of the fruit is that it lowers the risk of atherosclerosis by aiding in breaking down plaque that forms in the arteries. It also prevents from tooth decay, which is caused by dental plaque. Pomegranates are able to reduce disease risks by removing fat and detoxifying the digestive tract. The antioxidant slows down the absorption of “bad” cholesterol. It is great for the immune system because it helps to lower viral infections and bacteria found in the body. 
 
Consuming a medium sized pomegranate daily or drinking 8 ounces of juice is enough to receive the health benefits and nutrients of pomegranates.
