One of the biggest differences between depression and sadness is how long each lasts. Depression can last for days or even weeks.

Many a times people loose all interest in activities that they once enjoyed. They do not feel the connect and emotional bond with people they interact with and they also tend to feel a strong sense of disinterest or apathy about their overall life situation... not any particular aspect of their life, but a sense of hopeless about their entire life in general.

Do note that depression is a very serious health concern because its
symptoms can be very debilitating not just for that individual but also other who care and are around them like friends and family.

On the other hand, if you are sad, you might stay home and cry or not go outside and interact with people for short bursts of time. But eventually you will get over it and get back to your normal life.

A common misconception is that feelings of sadness does not require any medical treatment. Also, since in the initial stages depression can come across are sadness, it can easily go unrecognized and so undiagnosed! However, recognizing that you are suffering from negative emotions can save your life and the lives of others. Even people who are familiar with the symptoms of depression often confuse it for being sad. Hence, it is important to recognize the difference between the two.

Although both of these emotions are common, they are not the same. A depressed person tends to have a negative mood throughout the day, and it usually lasts for a long time. It is also common to experience insomnia, lack of energy, thoughts of death, and other negative emotions. Some people even suffer from suicidal thoughts.

A proper diagnosis of depression will need a thorough physical examination and psychiatric evaluation. The doctor will check your body for any physical causes of depression, and will also review your personal history of mental illness. After diagnosing the condition, the doctor will suggest a treatment plan.
While being sad from time to time, particularly due to some external situation, is a natural emotion. Depression on the other hand is a mental disorder that can affect anyone, regardless of age or background.

While sadness tends to be a temporary emotion, a depressed state can last for weeks, months, or even years. In fact, over 16 million adults in the United States reported experiencing a major depressive episode in 2015.

The main difference between depression and sadness is that depression is an emotional disorder, while sadness is a mood disorder that can interfere with your daily life.

People who are depressed often resort to alcohol or drugs, which can have adverse effects on their health. Secondly, depressed people may have trouble concentrating. They may even experience sleeplessness and cannot stick to healthy sleeping habits. A depressed person's thoughts are usually full of doom and despair.

Understanding the difference between feeling "blue" and being depressed can make a big difference in the lives of those who are suffering from this debilitating ailment.

While a person typically gets over their sad mood with time or a positive change in the root cause situation, depression needs prompt medical attention. With proper treatment, the symptoms of depression can be managed, and a person can lead a more productive and enjoyable life. If you or a loved one is suffering from depression, it is important to seek help as soon as possible.
