All attachments lead to mental imbalance and finally losing one’s peace of mind

Are you feeling a strong (negative or ‘seemingly’ positive) pull towards someone? Not just in terms of anger   or resentment, but it could also be a strong infatuation or   feeling   drawn to them.   I am saying ‘seemingly’ since all pulls and attachments are ultimately negative!

All   attachments   lead to   more   attachments and passionate entanglement. When these strong passions are not fulfilled, then   it leads to   anger and more obsession and then it leads to even more attachment and this becomes a negative spiral that easily gets out of control and makes the person lose their peace of mind.

Peace of mind is absolutely essential for each one of us. It is needed for us to even lead a normal life. Even if one wants to enjoy their lunch or sleep; we need to have a peaceful mind. If our mind is always turbulent, we will not be able to perform life’s most simple tasks and we definitely cannot feel joy without first there being peace.

So, when we get entangled in attachments and this in turn gets us more and more entangled in the situation, this initially turns to frustration, but this frustration soon leads to anger. When we are angry, it is even more difficult for us to see reason and re-attain our sense of mental balance. Because of this, it leads to more and more to frustration and anger to the point to one’s complete destruction.

There are many instances in history that indicate how strong infatuations, attachments and other such strong acts of passion- has led to anger and ultimately fall of great Men and Women (of apparent wisdom) along with their vast Kingdoms!
Though this may seem to be the case only when the object of one’s desire is not met- it is not the case! Even if one attains what one feels attracted to- it still leads to a sense of empty-ness and this just makes us want to look for something-else, something-new and this over time turns to boredom.

Sooner or later, this boredom will not be met, and this then turns to frustration. Frustration turns to anger and then anger leads to more dissonance, imbalance and ultimately destruction.

The cycle of attachment unless broken, always leads to more attachment and finally to one's destruction.  It keeps us caught in this cycle of "birth and death", lifetime after lifetime!

This quote by Lord Krishna, from The Bhagavad Gita beautifully explains this important lesson:

"One develops attachment to sense objects by thinking about sense objects. Desire for sense objects comes from attachment to sense objects, and anger comes from unfulfilled desires.
Delusion or wild idea arises from anger. The mind is bewildered by delusion. Reasoning is destroyed when the mind is bewildered. One falls down from the right path when reasoning is destroyed.”

- From The Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 2 and Verses: 62- 63
