What are some commonly used carrier oils in aromatherapy?

Essential oils are very strong, concentrated plant extract, so always remember to dilute your aromatherapeutic essential oils. Also check out,   Why do we use Carrier Oil in Aromatherapy?

Now, let us examine the main types of carrier oils and what their benefits are in aromatherapy. Three most common carrier oils are coconut oil, jojoba oil, and olive oil. In addition to their ease of availability and intrinsic odor, a key difference between them is their shelf life.

Coconut oil can be used in aromatherapy to create a soothing aroma. Depending on the type of coconut oil used, it can lend a mild coconut aroma to your mix. This can be appealing to many people- reminding them at a subtle level, of the sub-tropical beach islands and good old vacation times!
Picture
Jojoba oil is waxy in its consistency. It does not have any strong intrinsic smell, but does have a five-year shelf-life. Because of this, it is considered one of the best carrier oils in aromatherapy. But, because it is a bit thick and waxy, jojoba oil is typically mixed with coconut oil to improve its consistency and ease of application, particularly when using it for aromatherapeutic massage.

Sweet almond oil is another excellent choice for carrier oil in aromatherapy. Its nutty scent can be very appealing and can blend well with a variety of essential oils. It blends particularly very well with many floral essential oils.  It has a light consistency and many nutritional benefits for the skin (even with external application). Sweet almond oil is believed to counteract and heal dry skin and so is a great choice for skin care. In fact, you will frequently find sweet almond oil being used in many skin care products such as lotions, creams, and body waxes.

Then we also have carrier oils choices like olive or sunflower oil. They have a strong odor which can be quite off-putting for most people… reminding them of a Mediterranean kitchen instead of an aromatherapeutic spa! They also tend to have a 'greasier' feel to them, compared to other options like jojoba oil mixed with sweet almond or coconut oil. But on the other hand, these oils are easily available and comparatively much cheaper in cost.

Most vegetable oils sold in grocery stores are not cold-pressed or unrefined. They are heated and/or chemically processed, and do not provide the same benefits as cold-pressed or organic carrier oils. Any good aromatherapy retailer or a natural skin care supplier should be able to provide you with quality carrier oils.

Some other carrier oils which are particularly appreciated for their skin emolliating benefits are rose hip and argan oils.

Depending on your use, budget and ease of availability, there are always several carrier oil options for your various aromatherapeutic needs. Always remember to dilute your essential oils, particularly when you utilize them for skin and hair care!

Why do we use Carrier Oil in Aromatherapy?

When you apply essential oils to your skin, it is important to dilute them with a carrier oil. Essential oils are concentrated extracts and so, before using them, particularly for skin or hair care, it is important to dilute them to appropriate levels. A 2% dilution rate means 10 drops of essential oil for every ounce of carrier oil. But if you have a sensitive skin, then you can dilute them even more- just add a few drops of the essential oil to an ounce of carrier oil.
Picture
Essential oils are extracted from aromatic plant materials. They are light-weight and volatile, so they evaporate quickly. Because of which it can be difficult to preserve their therapeutic benefits for long or even maintain proper stability with some of the essential oils! This is where carrier oils can help to preserve them for long. Usually jojoba oil or a mixture of coconut and jojoba oils is used for this purpose.

Carrier oil helps preserve the essential oil's potency. The carrier oil provides a base for the various essential oils and because of this, very often they also form a base for other skin & hair care products that use aromatherapeutic essential oils.

You can choose from a variety of carrier oils, based on their own merit as well as how their beneficial qualities further enhance the overall aromatherapeutic experience of your chosen essential oils. Carrier oils help these aromatic essential oils to penetrate deeper into the skin and extend their therapeutic effects. They also make application of essential oils more comfortable for your skin.

Any good aromatherapy retailer or a natural skin care supplier should be able to provide you with quality carrier oils.

Aromatherapeutic benefits of patchouli essential oil- how we can use patchouli essential oil in aroma-healing…

4/17/2022

Patchouli essential oil is a powerful plant extract with a rich history of uses. The essential oil is extracted through the steam distillation of the leaves and stems of the Pogostemon Cablin plant. Steam distillation is the most effective method for extracting Patchouli Essential Oil, and it captures the essence of the plant. If you're looking for a natural aromatherapy product, patchouli is an excellent choice.

There are many health benefits of patchouli essential oil. Its potent antimicrobial and expectorant properties can combat respiratory problems. It can prevent and treat respiratory infections, and it also reduces the production of inflammatory markers in the body. People who suffer from coughs, chest congestion, and asthma will also benefit from patchouli's soothing effect. It can also be used to treat dry throat, asthma, sinuses, and pharyngitis.

The calming, sedative, and uplifting qualities of patchouli oil make it an excellent choice for aromatherapy. Studies have shown that patchouli improves mood by stimulating the release of endorphins. The benefits of patchouli essential oil are also being explored in psycho-aromatherapy, a complementary approach to treating psychiatric problems. It has been shown that fragrances affect the fight-or-flight response, and patchouli has a calming effect which helps a wide range of emotional states.
Picture
Patchouli essential oil is known to have a powerful stimulating effect on the secretion of various hormones and enzymes.

Using patchouli essential oil for aromatherapy is usually very safe, but you should remember to dilute it well with a good quality carrier oil, which is appropriate for your intended effect. As is in the case in aromatherapy, always use a diluted version of essential oils. Even when you are using them in non-applicative manner like in a diffuser, be sure to diffuse these essential oils in a well-ventilated area.

Keep in mind that, excessive exposure to patchouli essential oil can cause dizziness, headaches, and nausea. Also, patchouli essential oil should not be diffused near children, pets, or babies.

The sedative action of patchouli essential oil is helpful for calming people and inducing sleep. It is also an excellent antidote for insect bites. This is one of the reasons why patchouli is used in aromatherapy. This oil is considered to be one of the best essential oils for treating challenging skin conditions like dermatitis, acne or cracked skin.

It can also help in toning the skin and restoring its radiance. It has an amazing reputation as a natural remedy for skin ailments, and it's a perfect choice for massage oil, as well.

Another common benefit of patchouli essential oil is its aphrodisiac properties. Patchouli oil has long been associated with tantric sex, although this association is purely anecdotal. Its musky-sweet fragrance has become synonymous with sensuality. It can be applied topically to the skin or diffused using an aromatherapy diffuser. While it's an excellent addition to your favorite aromatherapy products, it can also be too strong for some people.

Some of the non-applicative uses of patchouli essential oil is in the field of air fresheners. Its potent anti-inflammatory properties make it a popular ingredient for air fresheners. Patchouli is also used in herbal bug sprays and insecticides.

As is the case for most essential oils, much of the evidence for the benefits of patchouli essential oil is anecdotal- i.e. its beneficial uses has been arrived at from people's personal experience and testimony. It is only in recent times that researchers are systematically evaluating the many beneficial properties of essential oils and the healing method of aromatherapy.

Difference between Hydrosols and Aromatic Waters- how they can offer a cheap and effective way to incorporate the many healing benefits of Aromatherapy!!

Hydrosol is a term commonly used in chemistry to mean a water solution. It comes from Latin- hydro meaning water and sol which is shortened from solution. Even though in a chemical context, hydrosol could mean any aqueous solution; in the aromatherapy context it means a “water solution” of the aromatic plant- plant extracts which produced during the steam distillation process of obtaining aromatic essential oils.

Hydrosols have several uses. Since they contain the water soluble components extracted from the plants during the steam distillation process as well as trace amounts of the essential oils; they exhibit several therapeutic properties of the corresponding essential oils.

Some hydrosols such as Rose ‘or’ Neroli (Orange Blossoms) can act as an authentic but cheaper alternative or substitute for their very expensive essential oil counterparts.
Picture
Do note that there is a difference between Hydrosols and aromatic waters. As noted earlier; hydrosols are water solutions and are also called as hydrolates, hydrolats, and floral waters or plant waters. They are the condensate water that is coproduced during the steam or hydro distillation of plant material for aromatherapeutic purposes. Hence hydrosols contain a “water extract” of the plant material. Aromatic water on the other hand is obtained by adding essential oils to water to produce fragrant (aromatic) water.

Keeping in mind that oil and water do not mix- in order to make aromatic water one needs to shake this compound solution constantly and allow it to remain mixed for a considerable length of time to obtain aromatic water with any significant fragrance. Otherwise, one would note that the water stays at the bottom and the essential oil floats to the top. It needs to be noted that commercially available aromatic waters contain emulsifiers which helps to keep the oil and water blended together.

Unlike hydrosols which is a by-product produced during the extraction of essential oil during steam distillation; aromatic waters are fairly easy to prepare on one’s own and hence also a cheaper alternative to the more expensive hydrosols.
Picture

Such therapeutic waters can be used to-

  • Cool a hot skin which is inflamed due to heat or hot flashes.
  • Soothe skin which is inflamed from excessive heat and/or sunburn.
  • Freshen up any room space.
  • Spritz on face to set make up. Spritz on finger nails to encourage healthy growth of nails.
  • Can be added to face packs and other such beautifying recipes which call for use of water as one of the key hydrating ingredient.
  • Sprayed on clothes during ironing to infuse them with mild aroma.

Care and precautions during hydrosols usage-

One should take all the safety measures and precautions for that one would for their corresponding essential oil. For further details note the section on Safety and Contraindications. In addition note that fresh hydrosol which has been produced in a clean distilled environment would be pure and free of bacteria.

To preserve its quality and ensure its effectiveness; hydrosols should be kept in the refrigerator and used in the year of distillation. It is always advisable to use fresh hydrosols in hygiene and skin care. Older hydrosols could be used as room fresheners.

Keeping in mind that there are many fake and adulterous aromatherapeutic products commercially available- it becomes imperative that one carefully chooses a product which has been manufactured by an authentic source and has been obtained by natural means in an environmentally friendly method of preparation.

Some special uses of certain commonly available hydrosols are-

  • German Chamomile
It has an emotionally calming effect on the mind and anti-inflammatory and soothing effect which externally applied to an irritated skin.
  • Roman Chamomile
It tends to behave like a psychic soother and like German Chamomile exhibits an anti-inflammatory effect; and can be used on dry, inflamed and/or sensitive skin.
  • Lavender
It has a very pleasing effect on the mind and helps in relieving stress and mental fatigue. Within skin care; it has a gentle, balancing and cooling effect on all skin types and is especially beneficial (helpful) for oily skin. It also aids in cooling and healing burned and/or irritated skin.
  • Orange Blossom
Mentally this floral water exhibits an uplifting and aphrodisiac effect and physically it has a gentle hydrating effect on the skin.
  • Rose
Rose floral water helps in easing nervousness and mental strain. It also has an aphrodisiac effect. Physically it is very tonifying for all skin types and hence usually used in several skin care products such as toners, after shave and bath splash.

Since ancient times, plant essences have been used for healing thru various means. The benefits of these essences have been experienced thru incense, perfumes, aromatic waters and embalming ointments.

Though Aromatherapy has been mentioned in several ancient healing techniques such as Ayurveda, the term “Aromatherapy” was coined in much recent times by the French Chemist, Rene Gattefosse. Aroma therapeutic healing is considered a very gentle and non-intrusive means of healing and is supposed to be suitable for people from all age-groups.

One of Aromatherapy’s most known and noted benefits is in the use of essential oils to relax and rejuvenate people i.e. in reducing stress and relieving stress related conditions such as anxiety, hypertension, insomnia and depression.
Picture
Aromatherapy involves utilizing mainly essential oils though at times one may also use herbal distillates and essential waters. An essential oil is any concentrated, hydrophobic liquid containing volatile aroma compounds from plants, which are called aromatic herbs or aromatic plants. They are also known as volatile or ethereal oils, or simply as the "oil of" the plant material from which they were extracted, such as oil of clove. Essential oils are extremely strong and potent and should never be used on the body by itself! It is best administered for massage by mixing with carrier oils.

Common carrier oils are Apricot Kernel, Avocado, Grape Seed, Hemp Seed, Jojoba, Sweet Almond and Grape Seed Oil.

Aromatherapy is used within:

Health & Healing-

  • Relaxation and Rejuvenation
  • Stress Relief

Personal Beauty & Grooming-

  • Personal beauty (in face packs, facial steams etc.)
  • Perfumes and fragrances

Regardless of their specific use, many of the essential oils are known to improve our overall sense of wellbeing. While one should use caution when using essential oils, they can help deepen our spiritual practice and provide much needed emotional comfort. Essential oils are known to heal the physical body, improve one’s mental makeup as well as increase a person’s sense of self-worth and self-esteem.
Picture
Even though many Essential Oils are effective in boosting the mood, some of them can cause other side effects. Also, even though Essential Oils are natural, they portray risk from allergic reactions, particularly to sensitive or immunity/health compromised individuals.

Now a days, many products claim using aromatic essential oils and their ‘healing benefits’. Even though, these oils have natural origins, they can contain very potent plant chemicals! Some Essential Oils are considered dangerous, where even a little exposure is known to cause strong negative reactions.

It is always best to utilize the benefits of these essential oils by using them externally. The safest way to apply essential oils or utilize them internally, is through the skin and should always be diluted with a good quality carrier oil. Although essential oils are effective for general wellness, there are certain types of fragrances that are not suitable for babies, children and certain sensitive individuals. Many of the essential oils are not advisable for pregnant or breastfeeding women.

It is important to understand the risks and benefits of a particular essential oil and its source-origin to ensure guaranteed purity, before using it for any aroma-therapeutic  purposes. As always, check with a medical physician and an Integrative Medicine specialist before starting with any natural-healing program, including using aromatic essential oils for an aromatherapy regimen of health and healing.
