Ma Kali- the quantum expression of the space-time

6/8/2020

Picture
Kali is the primordial energy of creation, the first feminine energy principle responsible for this entire manifested universe. That is why she is often addressed as Adi Shakti- the first energy principle.

For those who may not be familiar with the true Vedic philosophy and teachings, it is important to note that all Vedic and Hindu deities represent cosmic energies that are part of the Divine Universal Energy or the Supreme God-head.
Shiva represents the Male Cosmic energy principle of our form-created world and Parvati (who is another representation of Shakti), is the Female Cosmic energy principle.

Both these primal Male and Female cosmic energy principles are responsible for creating this Universe. Thus Shiva and Shakti together create this form-world as we know.

Kali, who represents Time, is the first and foremost of all Shakti-s, i.e. energy forms. Since all of creation manifests and exits in and thru her, she is also a representation of space- where all things can come into being.

In this way, Kali represents the Space-Time continuum which allows for this manifested material world to exist.

Lord Vishnu- The Vedic Archetype of The Cosmic Sustainer

5/4/2020

The word Vishnu comes from the combination of two words- Vishwa (cosmos) and Anu (atom- the smallest representation of the whole).

So, Vishnu is that energy which pervades everything in existence- the living and non-living!

Nothing can be in existence without Vishnu. Neither the living nor the non-living can exist without Vishnu. It is the very divine essence within everything in existence, not just on earth, but in everything in this cosmos!

This cosmic essence, this divinity within everything in existence the “Vishnu” within each one of us, is the very life essence, the soul or atman.
It is the microcosm Vishnu which is there within each one of us. This microcosmic Vishnu is a fraction of the macrocosmic Vishnu and yet it is a complete representation of the whole. The individual manifestation (an individual, a Jeev-atma) is the atomic version of the bigger manifestation (Param-atma).

As Lord Vishnu is the very essence within everything, it is his presence that allows any-person or thing to stay in existence.

Because of this, Lord Vishnu is considered as the one who sustains- manages and maintains this universe.
Picture
And to manage, maintain and sustain, we need nourishment, wealth, affluence, and this is provided by his consort- Goddess Laxmi. Ma Laxmi governs all eight forms of wealth and abundance.

If you are not familiar with the Ashta Laxmi, then you may want to watch:   Goddess Lakshmi (giver of wealth and affluence)- Symbolism and Meaning of Ma Laxmi (Lakshmi) and Eight Forms of Goddess Lakshmi (giver of wealth and affluence)- Who is Lakshmi and her eight forms?

If we are to ever see an image-representation of Lord Vishnu, then many a times Goddess Laxmi is shown at the feet of the Lord Vishnu, in humility and servitude.

This is because the energy of wealth and abundance, needs to be utilized for the wellbeing and sustenance of the cosmos and so the energy representation of Goddess Laxmi is shown to be in service to Lord Vishnu, who is the sustainer of this universe.

Symbolic and Esoteric meaning of the story of Lord Narasimha

5/4/2020

Lord Narasimha, which is the fourth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, and has the form of a half lion, half man- it indicates the evolutionary process of physical life on earth.

You can read How Lord Narasimha ridded the earth of Hiranyakashapu’s demonic terror!!
Picture
The story of Lord Narasimha clearly indicates that everything in the material creation ultimately has a limited time in existence. Even though one believes that one is clever and has ‘tricked’ the process of creation or the laws of nature- it is not so. Such trickery does not work!!

The universal laws of Karma impacts everyone and the universal process proceeds and unfolds in its own rhythm.

Lord Narasimha’s fierceness and anger could only be subdued by the loving presence of Prahalad and his true devotion. It is then that Lord Narasimha blessed all the others in the court.

This goes to show the power of true love and deep devotion- it has the power to counteract and transform even the most challenging of situations.

Enlightenment: Significance of Lighting an Earthen Oil Lamp (diya)

9/10/2019

Back in the days before electricity, lighting oil lamps was the main way people were able to light their homes after sunset. But even with electricity, we still use oil lamps during our pooja and prayers. Is there a special significance to lighting oil lamps?

Yes, there is… but not just any oil lamp. We are meant to light an earthen oil lamp during our prayers or performing any spiritual austerities, i.e. sadhana.
Picture
The earthen lamp signifies our body. We have heard the phrase- “we arise from dust and to dust we return”. Clay, mud, dirt has always been used to indicate that we have been created as part of this nature and also to signify our mortality, i.e. how after our death, our body (which is a mere vessel for our soul) will disintegrate, perish and return to nature.

The cotton wick indicates our ego. It burns because of the oil in the lamp. This oil is the accumulated soul-actions and soul-tendencies (i.e. karmas and samskaras), which compel us to perform more action. If this oil is pure and of high quality, then the wick will glow brightly. If there is impurity in the oil, then the flame will be dull… in the same way, if we have challenging or negative karmas then our life here will not be able to exhibit the full glory of our true divine nature.

It is not surprising that in Jyotish (Vedic Astrology), Saturn is the karaka (indicator) for oil as he is also the one who maintains and administers our karmas!!
Sooo… the signification of lighting an earthen oil lamp (mitti ka diya) is that… when we light an oil lamp, we are hoping that as the oil helps to burn off the cotton wick, similarly as we conscious do the prayers, pooja, it will help to burn off our karmas.  Thru devotion, by doing our prayers, pooja and so on, our ego will burn off and it will generate light, which is our true essence (our soul).

So next time, you are lighting a diya (earthen oil lamp). Don’t do it mindlessly. Light the lamp with a conscious intension. Do your prayers with a conscious intension of burning off your karmas and by doing so, you are slowly becoming more and more light. I.e. you are slowly becoming ‘enlightened’.

The Significance of Anant Chaturdashi- our spiritual transformation can now begin…

9/23/2018

Picture
The tenth day of Ganesh Chaturthi (Ganesh Utsav) festival is called as the Anant Chaturdashi. It is celebrated with great joy and reverence. It is believed that Lord Ganesh, who was residing amongst us during these past nine days has heard all our pleas and prayers. He has patiently heard all our tales of suffering and now as his sculpted clay form is being dissolved in the waters, he is also removing all the causes of our suffering and blessing us with immense gifts and happiness.

As per the mythology- Lord Ganesh is supposed to be going back to the higher dimensions to meet his father, Lord Shiva. Lord Ganesh rules the first chakra, Muladhara. This chakra is concerned with survival and our daily existence. Lord Shiva rules the higher chakras and particularly the seventh chakra (Sahasra) which signifies a completely awakened Kundalini (Shakti energy). The clay form of Lord Ganesh when he is visiting the earth (Karmic plane) indicates the mortal nature of man, which needs to be dissolved for spiritual transformation.

The day of Anant Chaturdashi signifies this awakening of our Kundalini energy. If we have been in-tune with the natural energies and Lord Ganesh; praying to him with true earnestness, then he will take us to our highest awakened self (an opened seventh chakra) and this transformation is the awakening and rising of the Kundalini energy.

It is interesting to note that the next fifteen days of the dark fortnight are called as the Pitru Paksha, where we are expected to pay off our ancestral karmic debt; our pitru-roon.
These fifteen days of pitru paksha are then followed by Navratri, which is the nine-day celebration of mother Shakti energy- culminating into the festival of Vijaya Dashami, which literally means the tenth day of victory.

So our soul journey which started with paying obeisance and truthfully praying to Lord Ganesh now experiences transformation, which in turn awakens our Kundalini energy.

We then need to truly work with those Shakti energies (during Navratri), to victoriously transform ourselves!

Hopefully on this day of Anant Chaturdashi, Lord Ganesh will bless all of us with true understanding of our own real nature, our conscious self, so we can start the process of our transformation.

Utilizing Amavasyas to pay off our Karmic Debt- our Pitru Roon…

9/19/2018

Picture
There are many types of karmic debts that each one of us have- one of the key ones being Pitru Roon. i.e. ancestral debt. This is very important since we have received our bodies, our physical make up from our ancestors what we colloquially call our genetics.

One of the best ways to pay off our Pitru roon is perform shraddha. This is a special prayer that is performed on the death anniversary of the person. There are many times where we may not know the death date of a person- particularly as we think of several prior generations ago- for e.g. you may not know the death date of your great grandfather. In all such instances, you can perform these special prayers during the Pitru Paksha. Please refer to our post on the Significance of Pitru Paksha for more details.
But, in addition to these two times, there is another time-phase which is great to work on reducing our ancestral karmic debt- our Pitru Roon! And that is during the dark fortnight each month.

How do we perform these prayers?? Personally, what I have found immensely helpful is to simply offer food and water to our ancestors with usual prayers. Light a special lamp (diya) and an incense to specially offer them thanks and express gratitude- in plain language.
Remember that ancestral debt or Pitru-roon is one of the key types of soul-debts (karmic debts) that we carry, and it is not possible to attain moksha without paying off this debt. Even though divine blessings and grace can eliminate all forms of karma and clear all our debts, doing these prayers and showing gratitude to our ancestors is a very simple and effective way to not only show love to our forefathers (who continue to live on through us) but also clear our ancestral debt, our Pitru roon- all in one go.

Why Hindus apply Tilak on their foreheads...

8/31/2018

Picture
Picture
Picture
Tilak means, applying sandalwood paste, sacred ash, turmeric or kumkum (red vermillion powder) on the forehead or between eyebrows. Tilak is usually applied on the forehead, either between the eyebrows or starting from the spot between the eyebrows to the top of the head. At times, it is smeared all across one’s forehead.

The spot between the eyebrows is the seat of the sixth chakra- Ajna as well as of the third eye of Consciousness; an eye, which is not sullied by karmic memory or samskaras.

According to Hindu philosophy, applying tilak on the forehead reinforces our connection with the divine and reminds us of our true-life purpose, which is moksha- i.e. freedom from these cycles of birth and death.

Over the years, in the Indian sub-continent, tilak was applied to wish good luck before any important event or before going on any important journey and welcoming someone by applying a tilak was done to mark and celebrate their successful and victorious return, their accomplishment.

In this way, there are many spiritual and cultural significations to why Hindus and several other cultures in the Indian sub-continent apply tilak on their forehead.

From spiritual or cultural viewpoint, however we look at it; we find that applying tilak on one’s forehead brings great benefits. Something to think about and adopt, so as to enhance our conscious lifestyle.

Honoring The Divine Nagas

8/15/2017

Picture
Today, let us look at the importance of Serpent energy and how to honor it.

Snakes have a divine origin as they are believed to be the descedents of Kashyapa Rishi, who was the son of Lord Brahma and Kadroo who was of the Naga race of the Pitru Loka. So, here itself we find that Nagas have a lineage that allow them to be connectors between the higher dimensions like Lord Brahma, all of us- i.e. mankind and ancestral dimension (Pitru Loka).

There are many stories throughout Vedic scriptures that indicate the good actions of Nagas and there are some which indicate their tendencies towards lies, deceit, greed, envy and other such negative traits. But most of the stories extoll the beneficial aspects of this serpent energy.

For e.g. we are all aware of the Kundalini energy which lies dormant at the base of our spine. But there are many other divine Nagas, Snakes and serpents which play a very important role in our life. There is Vasuki for example, it is the serpent that offered itself to be used as the rope to churn this cosmic ocean!

Ofcourse like all Vedic mythology stories, “The Churning of the Ocean” is a symbolic story- what this indicates is that snakes are the cosmic channels that allow one to traverse between the various worlds of the Divine (devas) and the Diabolical (asuras or those with devilish tendencies). These serpent energies are like the worm holes mentioned in modern Quantum Science which seems to connect various dimensions of existence!

Later when Shiva’s throat felt scalded as he drank the poison which emerged from the cosmic churning, this same Naga- Vasuki graced Shiva’s throat to soothe it from heat and burning of the poison. Now this story of Cosmic churning of the ocean as well as the famous image of Shiva have very clear and often missed symbolism which I will explain in subsequent videos but coming back to the Nagas we find that they play a crucial role not just in mysticism but also the various energetic dimensions.

There are many other such amazing Nagas, like Ahir Budhinya, which is the presiding deity of the Uttar Bhadrapada nakshatra (within our zodiac- it falls in sign of Pieces), then there is the Anant Shesha Nag, on which Lord Vishnu rests within the cosmic ocean.

After Kundalini, the most famous serpent energy known to many is probably of the Rahu and Ketu! Basically, it was the asura Swarbhanu, who drank a few drops of the nectar of immortality and was slain by Vishnu’s discus into Rahu and Ketu.

Though at an apparent level, it may seem like an apt punishment to a stealing asura, we need to appreciate the willingness of Rahu and Ketu to benefit us by becoming a cosmic gateway. Ketu rules the first Muladhara chakra in our body and Rahu rules the highest seventh Sahasrara chakra in our body. Rahu and Ketu thus play a major role in providing us the energetic gateway to - the cosmic, quantum wormhole that allows us a possibility to get out of these cycles of birth and death, of Karma and move on to higher ascending dimensions.

And then there is Takshaka, who was the king of the nagas. Now, Takshaka plays a very important role in why we celebrate Nag Panchami to honor all these Divine Nagas and to seek their blessings.

So, it is a good practice to honor these divine serpent energies not just on the day of Nag Panchami, but every day. Pay respect to them and seek their blessings and guidance so that you will be provided with the wisdom you need to walk along your path of conscious living.

The Eight forms of Ma Laxmi (Ashta Laxmi)

3/12/2017

Picture
Who is Goddess Laxmi and the Eight Forms of Ma Lakshmi (Ma Ashta Lakshmi)

Goddess Laxmi (also written as Lakshmi) indicates wealth, prosperity and good fortune. She is the feminine consort of Lord Vishnu.

As Vishnu is the energy that sustains the Universe, it is but natural that his consort is the shakti, the ability or the energy that allows for maintenance of this Universe. After all, who can deny that we need money and good fortune to live and sustain ourselves. She is sometimes simply indicated by the word Sri and her Bija mantra, i.e. seed sound or seed mantra is Shrim (Shreem). Laxmi is one of the Goddess that form the prime Shakti trinity of Maha Laxmi.

As we all know wealth and fortune is not just about having money. We can be fortunate to have good food, good children, great knowledge and so on…

In all, there are eight such avenues by which a person could be blessed with prosperity and each of them are referred to as a form of Goddess Laxmi. A conglomerate of these eight Laxmi goddesses is called as the Ashta Laxmi (ashta means eight).
  1. As Adi Laxmi or Maha Laxmi she is believed to be the daughter of Sage Bhrigu (one of the key Sapta Rishis- seven great Vedic seers). She is considered as the first (adi) as well as the great (maha) one.
  2. As Dhana Laxmi, she is believed to be the energy of money or wealth (dhana).
  3. As Dhanya Laxmi, she is considered as the goddess of agricultural wealth and is believed to bestow grains (dhanya) and food/ nourishment to a person.
  4. As Gaja Laxmi, she is the giver of wealth from livestock as well as the giver of royal status and the power associated with it. Since, it is as Gaja Laxmi that the Goddess is believed to have brought back the lost wealth of Lord Indra (who is considered as the King of the Gods). She is believed to be worshipped by elephants (Gaja), that represent strength, intelligence and high status.
  5. As Santana Laxmi, she is the giver of progeny (santana). It is considered a great fortune to have able children and this form of Laxmi can bless a native with the fortune-wealth of good children.
  6. As Dhairya or Veera Laxmi, she can bless the native with Dhairya (courage) to overcome difficulties in life as well as Veera (valour) to face one’s challenges and life-battles.
  7. As Jaya or Vijaya Laxmi, she grants one the victory (jaya) over hurdles and obstacles in one’s life- to emerge as the winner (vijaya).
  8. As Vidya Laxmi, she bestows knowledge, wisdom and the key energy that indicates the various arts and sciences.
Since any kind of good fortune or wealth is depicted as Laxmi, we do find several other mentions of Laxmi such as:
  • Aishwarya Lakshmi, one who gives Prosperity and Riches (aishwarya).
  • Saubhagya Lakshmi, one who bestows good fortune (saubhagya) and overall prosperity.
  • Rajya Lakshmi, one who blesses a native with secular power and a territory which they ‘rule’ over. This could be literal or figurative area (rajya) in which one enjoys absolute power and precedence.
  • Vara Lakshmi, one who blesses and bestows boons (vara).

In today’s materialistic societies, we typically think of Ma Laxmi mainly as the giver of money and riches. It would be helpful to realize that true fortune is not just money but a combination of various aspects of Ashta Laxmi.

Iconic Symbolism of Goddess Laxmi

3/31/2016

Picture

Laxmi is the consort to Lord Vishnu who is the sustaining force in this Universe and Laxmi (wealth and affluence) allows enablement of sustainment.

The name Laxmi comes from the sanskrit root word ‘lak’ which is indicative of knowing one’s goal or objective. She is typically shown with four hands which signify the four main goals of having a human birth- viz- dharma (righteousness), artha (wealth), kama (desires) and moksha (enlightenment- freedom from this cycle of birth and death).

Laxmi is usually shown carrying a lotus in one or two hands. Lotus symbolizes knowledge, self-realization and moksha (liberation). It indicates that though her presence is sought after for sustaining oneself in this world, her true blessing is to provide us self-realization and enlightenment. She does that with the help of her elder sister Alaxmi, who symbolizes poverty and lack of affluence.

Laxmi uses an Owl, a very intelligent bird that sees only at night time as her vehicle. It signifies that Laxmi is the fruit (the result) that we receive from all our karma (actions) that we perform during the day. This is also the reason that Laxmi is believed to visit our homes in the evenings and night.

Owl is blind during day time. It is a reminder for us to not be ‘blinded’ by our wealth, knowledge and affluence. It is believed that the owl which is always pictured with Ma Laxmi is her elder sister Alaxmi and that they both work in close dynamics!

Lakshmi is sometimes shown with one or two elephants, sometimes spraying water or showering flowers. Elephants symbolize work, activity and strength. When they are showering water or flowers, it is to indicate rain, fertility and abundant prosperity.

Also, Lakshmi typically wears a red or green sari (Indian dress) embroidered with golden threads which symbolizes beauty and wealth. Laxmi is many a times shown standing to indicate that her presence in one’s life is very transitory.

Her face and hand gestures indicate compassion, giving and charity. She is shown carrying either a pot of gold coins or pouring out gold coins, indicating the wealth her presence brings in our life.

In today’s materialistic societies, we typically think of Ma Laxmi mainly as the giver of money and riches. It would be helpful to realize that true fortune is not just money but a combination of various aspects of Ashta Laxmi.

What is a Rudraksha?

11/21/2013

Rudraksha is the bead of rudraksha tree that is said to be the tears of Rudra, the destructive form of lord Shiva that has flowed down to earth. One of the stories according to the legend is when lord Shiva opened his eyes after a long period of Samadhi.

He saw lot of beings in the universe, struggling for the liberation of their soul. Seeing this, the lord became compassionate and tears flow from his eyes to the earth.  It is believed that these beads were later called as Rudraksha.

Rudraksha beads have a great place in the path of spirituality. No other tree has such a position like that of rudraksha because of the legend and its sanctity. There are lot of scriptural references for the rudraksha and its tree. It is considered, the Lord Shiva Himself. Though the rudraksha beads are considered as the tears of lord Shiva, they have medicinal and magical properties that has been experienced, when worn.
Picture
Rudraksha trees flower generally during the rainy season and the first fruit is said to bear in the first five years. Some of the type in the species takes around twenty years also. The best quality beads are categorized based on the shape and its segments – called as mukha (face).  Number of faces of rudraksha has spiritual significance for any spiritual aspirant. The number of faces are as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 22, out of which single faced rudraksha is the Lord Shiva himself.

There are different mantras based on the number of faces of one rudraksha bead.  The common one is the pancha mukhi (five faced) while the single faced is very rare.  Pancha mukhi is worn by most of the religious devotees and is available in common.

Two faced – dwimukhi rudraksha symbolizes the ardha narishwara form of lord Shiva.  It is otherwise the male-female energy or the symbolic expression of Shiva and Shakti.  It has serious effects on the tantric sadhaks and is helpful in awakening the kundlini Shakti. This is also widely known as Gauri Shankara rudraksha.

Each rudraksha has bija mantra, based on the number of faces it has. It should be understood that just by wearing the rudraksha rosary, one cannot possess the spiritual powers.  The beads can be of help to attract the cosmic energies helpful in making the spiritual evolution to higher levels, that also based on the personality, attitude etc. of the wearer.

It is also believed that rudraksha beads have even castes. They are not the caste system in the modern world. It is like the brahmanas, Kshatriyas, vaisyas, and shoodras. It should be worn based on one’s spiritual evolution, samskaras, etc.

Significance of Kali's Dancing Pose

4/8/2012

Picture
Kali is usually shown dancing in a particular pose with one foot on the ground and one on Shiva’s inert (seemingly life-less) body. This shows that Kali is the energy of action- the kinetic energy thru whom all of manifestation is possible and Shiva who represents Consciousness is inert (Pure Potentiality) without her presence.

Together Shiva & Shakti, i.e. Consciousness and Creative Energy; Pure Potentiality and the Kinetic Energy create all of life. This is the Dance of Life. The dance of Shiva and Shakti create all of manifestation- the entire cosmos. They are life (manifested consciousness) and thus the dancer and we (the resulting manifested forms) are their dance.

Vedic Culture, which   is the culture of the original Himalayan Masters,    is one of the most advanced ancient civilizations.  It is a tradition which has given mankind several treasures such Yoga, Meditation, Conscious-Living and Vedic Sciences such as Ayurveda, Vedic Physics & Vedic Mathematics.

It was always a scientific culture that understood the very mechanics and workings of this Universe. Their deities, their gods and goddesses were all a way of expressing and explaining these energies and their inter-working. Modern Quantum Mechanics is just starting to understand string theory, dark matter etc. which have all been fundamental to the Vedic understanding. Because of this, they developed ways and methods which allowed one to best tap into life-energy itself.

Vedic Culture, as it was practiced by the Himalayan Masters, was always a "way of life" and not a religion.

Their basic view was that, there is only ONE Supreme God-head (God as our creator) and each one of us can find our path to it- experience union with that divinity (Yoga) in their own way.

Because of this, anyone with any religious affiliations and beliefs can still benefit from their knowledgeable ways of Vedic Wisdom.

Our attempt here is to present this ancient wisdom in a modern light, so our readers can interpret the true, essential meaning more easily and then extrapolate it to their own specific scenarios and enhance the quality of their life and being-ness.
