What is a Grahan? Why is it important?

Eclipse is called grahan in sanskrit. What does it really mean? Now, astronomically we know that Lunar eclipse called Chandra grahan occurs when earth blocks the sun light from reaching the moon. Because of this, moon gets shadowed and seems to “disappear”. Solar eclipse called Surya grahan on the other hand occurs when moon blocks the sun light from reaching the earth. This causes a shadow on the earth and depending on how well moon is blocking our earth, we could have a partial, total or annular solar eclipse.

Each year we have approximately two (sometimes three) set of eclipses. I am saying a set, since we typically find that a solar eclipse will be followed by a lunar eclipse or vice versa. Solar eclipses always occur on a new moon day and lunar eclipses always occur on a full moon day. Also, Lunar Eclipses can be partial or total in nature and Solar eclipses can be partial, total or annular.

Keep in mind that depending on where you are on earth i.e. in which region, a particular eclipse that is occurring may or may not be visible i.e. it cannot be observed in your region. This becomes extremely important, since the energetic effects of these eclipses are noticed, are felt only in those areas where they are visible. And depending on the extent they are visible, we will find their effects on people and vegetation of that region.

As we know Sun and Moon are very important for life to exist on earth. Sun is not just the source of light and vitality, it very much determines and defines our existence. Energetically sun is said to represent our ego, our sense of self or identity. Moon on the other hand represents our mind or manas as it is called in Sanskrit.

It determines how we perceive what is happening to us and also what is happening around us. It governs our perception of this material creation, our reality around us and ultimately our emotional wellbeing. Moon is also very important for our physical wellbeing since it governs our body’s fluids- i.e. not just blood but also other fluids like lymph and other digestive as well as waste fluids.

So why are these Surya and Chandra grahan, i.e. Solar and Lunar eclipse important? It is because during an eclipse, these luminaries get blocked and along with them, our source of vitality- our very existence… our body, our mind feel blocked and get impacted!

Typically, we find that Solar eclipses are more powerful and seem to have more obvious effect on larger groups of people. For example, following a solar eclipse, leaderships in teams, companies, organizations and so on tend to change, government tend to have major changes and even have been known to collapse, civil unrest is seen more predominantly following a powerful solar eclipse.

Lunar eclipse on the other hand provide a more personal transformation period. Unsettled emotions, past hurt, pain and fears may surface, so we can consciously address them. Also, many a times- people may experience intense emotions which they are not able to understand or assimilate and they could cause explosive behavior!

Effects from a solar and lunar eclipses can be felt until six months to a year and sometimes even until the next solar or lunar eclipse! Sometimes, when these eclipses occur, they trigger an energy point from previous powerful eclipses.

Now keep in mind these are intense energies and they will impact each one of us in varying degrees of intensity. How it is specifically going to impact you as an individual would be determined by where you are situated and how much you come under the influence of these eclipse energies. Which in turn would be dependent on your own grahas.

Now typically this information is obtained by looking at a Vedic (sidereal) astrological chart but considering all the confusion that exists around how these charts are calculated; not to mention lack of ethics that surrounding the astrological business, it is best to consider simply working with graha energies and strengthening their positive presence in your life. If you are aware of some good, authentic Jyotish or can learn this wise science, then surely do go ahead. Jyotish can provide lot of guidance in how best one can progress in their spiritual pursuits.

So, as I was saying… how any eclipse will affect you will depend on a lot of factors. Also, these eclipse energies are felt many days in advance. People who are sensitive to energies could feel them sometimes even weeks in advance!

The eclipse energies are challenging only for outward material situations. So, if one is solely focused on material pursuits or involved in material working during these eclipses, then that is when we find challenging issues. These eclipse times are great for spiritual practices. It is believed that any kind of prayer, sadhana or meditation conducted during an eclipse will bear lots of good fruits in the shortest possible time.

So, it is important to be cognizant of these eclipses and when they are occurring. When they do, check out if they are visible in your region and if yes, then to take proper physical and energetic care to try your best to protect yourself from any adverse effects and to tap into as much as possible into the spiritually beneficial energies.

Vedic Culture, which   is the culture of the original Himalayan Masters,    is one of the most advanced ancient civilizations.  It is a tradition which has given mankind several treasures such Yoga, Meditation, Conscious-Living and Vedic Sciences such as Ayurveda, Vedic Physics & Vedic Mathematics.

It was always a scientific culture that understood the very mechanics and workings of this Universe. Their deities, their gods and goddesses were all a way of expressing and explaining these energies and their inter-working. Modern Quantum Mechanics is just starting to understand string theory, dark matter etc. which have all been fundamental to the Vedic understanding. Because of this, they developed ways and methods which allowed one to best tap into life-energy itself.

Vedic Culture, as it was practiced by the Himalayan Masters, was always a "way of life" and not a religion.

Their basic view was that, there is only ONE Supreme God-head (God as our creator) and each one of us can find our path to it- experience union with that divinity (Yoga) in their own way.

Because of this, anyone with any religious affiliations and beliefs can still benefit from their knowledgeable ways of Vedic Wisdom.

Our attempt here is to present this ancient wisdom in a modern light, so our readers can interpret the true, essential meaning more easily and then extrapolate it to their own specific scenarios and enhance the quality of their life and being-ness.
