Categories: Shloka For The Week and The Bhagavad Gita
Message from this shloka is not only applicable for this week but for all time to come- this is the wisdom of The Bhagavad Gita. The divine song as presented by Lord Krishna to Arjuna in the battlefield of Kurukshetra, which represents the battle of life- as we all experience.
Here is message-quote from The Bhagavad Gita for this week, which is the last week of 2019 and not just the first week of 2020, but also of a brand new decade. This message is from Chapter 7, Verses 6-7 which says:
“Know that all creatures have evolved from this twofold energy; and the Supreme Spirit is the source of origin as well as dissolution of the entire universe. There is nothing higher than the Supreme Being, O Arjuna. Everything in the universe is strung on the Supreme Being, like jewels are strung on the thread of a necklace. ”

This is an important transitioning week from the year 2019 into 2020. We are not only closing out a year, but also a decade and starting a new one.
At an apparent level, there are many aspects- this could include people, locations, situations that we are leaving behind, and we are looking forward to the new in the coming years.
All of life- the animate and the inanimate objects, i.e. all the living beings as well as the objects are able to exist- because there is that something within them- ‘their essence’. We call that the divine energy or soul. This is more apparent when we see living being, but even inanimate objects that a certain essence about it- it is very dense for us to sense, but there are those who are able to tap into that energy level.

We get nutrition from a particular fruit or vegetable as per its vitamin and mineral content, but what is that ‘something’ that you feel even more nourished when you eat that fruit fresh?? Similarly, what is that special energy you feel when you hold a certain crystal in your hand or visit somewhere in nature? If you have experienced something ‘special’ then you have been able to tap into the essence of the in-animate world!
So, what is this essence which is within all of us?? It is the divine energy- the presence. Lord Krishna asks Arjuna to always remember this fact- that everything in this universe contains him at the very core, as it’s existential essence. Why is this important to remember??
In today’s day and age, we find that each individual is do attached with their own belief- this belief could be about their social and individual identity, their religion, their country… ultimately these are the many beliefs that shape up a person’s identity. In today’s time, people are so attached to their identity that they fail to see the divine essence in all the other people they meet or even interact with (via social media and news).

There seems to be a surge of intolerance- where each individual belief that their way of thinking and behavior is correct, and all other ways are wrong!! There are some sad, painful and even criminal manifestations of this behavior as indicated by the rise in hate-crimes, but if we as individuals are indulging in this way of thinking then at some level, we are also fostering such energies within us.
At an outward level we may better control our actions and not do something that could be considered ‘incorrect’ or ‘criminal”; but at a collective consciousness level, we are adding to this negative, detrimental energy with our own mis-guided and mis-placed beliefs!!
It is important that we remember that at an apparent level a person could be harmful, criminal or even totally anti-soceity; but they still have that same divine essence within them, that exits within us and all of existence.
Does that mean we convince ourself- all is well and that it is all okay!! NO, not at all… if a particular action is harmful to you or the society at large then do what you need to do to curtail and counteract it, but do the required with respect to the action, while remembering that the do-er of those action does have the divine essence within them.

Some great leader once said- “be against the crime, not the criminal”. This is very true, instead of ‘hating’ criminals, it is important that we view them with love as fellow being/s, with the divine essence within them while at the same time, doing our very best to tackle and counteract the ‘crime’!!
This is also the reason why it is customary to greet someone with namaste. When we meet someone and start out our interaction with the word “namaste”, you are helping to establish the divine connection between the two of you. What you are saying to them is that, the divine essence in me is greeting the divine essence in you!
This is a great way to remind our self of Lord Krishna’s words…

When you meet someone- in person or via social media or even hear about them in the news, before you think about them or judge their words or actions, first and foremost, mentally say a “namaste” to them.
This will help you to bring the wisdom of Lord Krishna’s words into your daily life… not just for this week and into this new year and this new decade… but going forward, all your life!!
