Vasant (also called Basant) Panchami is celebrated on the fifth day of Vedic lunar month of Magha shukla paksha (bright fortnight). We are now observing Sun’s apparent northward motion (uttarayana) in the northern hemisphere. Days slowly start getting longer and with it, life starts flourishing again after the lull of long winter…
We start welcoming spring (vasant or basant) by praying to the energy Goddess of Creation and Wisdom: Saraswati. As per some of the mythological stories, this is also the day- Shiva brought Kamadeva (god of passion) back to life. Kamadeva along with his wife Rati were again able to indulge in passionate endeavors. Kamadeva was cursed to ashes by Shiva for distracting mankind from their spiritual path.
This festival of Vasant Panchami signifies start of all creation which requires passionate action. But, such acts need to be initiated with proper blessings by the very wisdom of creation: Goddess Saraswati.
