But don’t feel bad. Since every year, many people make all kinds of resolutions… to give up on their addictions, take up new exercise regimen, resolutions to better manage their finances, save more money and so many other decisions- and all across the board; most of these resolutions fall apart even before the end of the month!!
These are changes that are usually desperately needed in those people’s lives. They have already identified the challenges that are preventing them from leading a healthy, happy and successful life (whatever these things mean to them at an individual level).

We all know that change is always difficult to implement and accept. But even when it is badly impacting a person’s sense of joy, health and well-being, they cannot seem to win their “Battle of Resolutions”.
And the worst part is that- it leaves people with a sense of “losing” or “being weak”, right at the start of the year! How upsetting is that!!!!!
You probably have heard of ‘timing is everything’. Most people think of it as either something dogmatic, superstitious or even cliché and simply ignore the importance of timing important events.
Now, when you consider this whole “Battle of Resolution” scenario from a Vedic science perspective, it will make perfect sense.
For one, it is still Dakshiyana and the Divine energies are considered to be at much lower levels than the non-divine energies!
And then to aggravate matters further, with Makar Sankranti being right around the corner on Jan 14th of each year, the new year eve (as per Gregorian calendar) would be the darkest phase of the Sun’s motion!! To understand this, think of how pre-dawn times are considered as the darkest part of a night.
In case, you are not aware, Jan 14 i.e. Makar Sankranti is supposed to be the start of Uttarayana- i.e. Sun’s motion back towards light. As already mentioned in another article- Jan 14th is usually a great day to strategize and plan for the year ahead. Read the full article: Makar Sankranti- today Sun can give you special burst of energy. Utilize its blessings to plan for the entire year…
No wonder most people just do not feel the strength, determination or will to continue with their resolutions. We have life on earth because of the Sun and it not only provides us light, it also allows us to have good health, vitality, power for life and zest for living. It is also not a wonder that decisions made when Sun is farthest from earth typically just seem to lack an ‘intrinsic power’ to continue… and so they obviously fail!!
In fact, there is a simple and yet extremely effective timeline which can be utilized to ensure we are adequately benefiting from the divine positive energies and the bright effulgence of our Sun to pave way to joy and success in life.
How? I will cover that in the next article… stay tuned and till then- “wish you the very best times ahead…”
Special note: In case you are wondering about sidereal and tropical zodiac, then sidereal calculations are used in Vedic Astrology (originally called Jyotish- The Science of Light) and tropical calculations are used in what is considered as Western Astrology. Typically, there will be a degree lag of around 23 degrees between the two zodiacs. |
This year and probably going forward, depending on where you are living in the world, the exact day on which you celebrate Makar Sankranti would vary from the traditional Jan 14th. This year, residents from several countries like India and further east like Australia & New Zealand are celebrating Makar Sankranti on Jan 15th.
As always, when it comes to timing such cosmic events, it is best to refer to your local Panchang.
